...wait, is there a difference between American soccer and Australian soccer? Or is the difference only in football? I'm confused.

Football is what the Brits call it, football is something different here, and soccer here is pretty much exactly the same as what it is in the states!

Weren't you the one that told me to bash my sister with a bag of oranges?

This I can not deny! Smile devil

Sangu can't do that; her arm is in a sling because when she moves her arm, it moves her collarbone.

I believe HK was referring to the Aussie Football League in his comments here. The US term "soccer" is played pretty much the same all over the world I believe. However, "football" means something different in the US, UK, and AUS.

in AUS, football translates to the AFL which is pretty cool and is something like rugby and US football but everyone is also a punter and the only way to score is to kick it in the goal for 6pt or 1pt.

If you kick it up between the two big poles, that's 6 points, a goal, between a big pole and small gets you 1 point or as we call it a behind! A score is kept for the Behinds and the Goals and then both are added up!
Also kicking it across the ground into the two big goals also counts as a behind!
That's all you need to know! Evil evil
Well not really, when running with ball, a player must bounce it on the ground every 5 metres (I think.) Passing is done with a hand pass called punting, catching a kicked ball gets you a mark, where which no one can touch you and you get a kick from where you go the mark!
One of the best teams sports there is me thinks, but I liked it better when I didn't know many people who followed it, I came down here and everyone follows it! It's kinda tedious, the discussions get a bit too involved for my liking, so I've been put off it for a while!

In that second picture volentshiva posted, you see all the players jumping on each other, that's called a speccy! People speccy off people to get height and (obviously) catch the ball!

One of the best things about A.F.L. is the brawls! Evil evil

another thing...

... I've noticed about the AFL while watching it on Fox Sports World is that there seems to be a large number of players during the tv games that are just plain good looking guys. I mean you go to US basketball/football or UK football and you will see some ugly bastards on tv. I just haven't seen too many ugly aflers so far.

Also, no real padding in AFL and they take some serious hits! Gotta respect the balls of that or you just see it as crazy stupid.

do they have cheerleaders for AFL teams?

Thanks! It's good to comments like that every now and then! White laugh But really, that's just what most Australians look like!

Watch NRL, that's our other football sport which is for the beefy, bull-like people, a bit like your American Football!

Their mums! White laugh Seriously, we don't have fancy dancing women on the side cheering for out teams, instead we've got the fans cheering in the stands! The comical stereotype for AFLers is that they're all mumma's boys!
The stereotype for a football supporter is a true blue Aussie with Irish/Scottish decent, works as a builder or some labour job and loves drinking VBs and Stubbies and eating meat pies! This is far from the truth, a fuckload of Australians are AFL supporters, wether they're a lawyer or plumber, but you'll find the majority of supporters and fanatics are in Victoria, where the sport was born (originally a game invented by Aboriginals!)

I am from victoria, and have followed the Melbourne Demons all my life... This pic is of Colin Sylvia (a demon) taking a good grab. You can see why there are so many injuries.

Its an interesting sport; it combines all the skills from so many sports, and IMO is the perfect balance of skil, fitness, strength, courage and speed. You can be small and play: Aaron Davey of the Dees is 65kg (145 lb) but lightning quick and one of our best players. Or you can be huge and slow: Mark Jamar (shown in the front of the picture getting a bit of a rib tickler) is 6'8" and 250 lb. Every player must be a quarterback, a wide receiver an offensive/defensive linesman and of course a punter/kicker. (sorry if I have bastardised your game with the incorrect terminology)

Many people say it is too confusing to watch, there are 36 players on the field (plus about 8 umpires (refs)) + runners brining water to the players. On top of all this there is no offside rule and therefore no set line as in rugby/football so players just seem to run all over the place. Come to think of it its probably one of the most confusing game to watch for someone who hasn't grown up with it.

Its not as tough as people say, though there are very serious injuries most of these are due to the speed at which it is played. I know I would much rather be in an aussie rules game without padding than facing the monsters in american football, even with padding.

So if you find yourself in Aus, make sure you get to a game, and might I suggest you get to a Demons game, and keep an eye out for #36 (Aaron Davey). He usually does at least one thing amazing in each game.
