»Are you religous?«

The word "soul" is mentioned in some translations indeed, but it's mentioned in a sense of "himself", like "There lived 50 souls in that village" or "She is the good soul of this building"

Certainly Jesus does talk in riddles

but when he says it is better to lose your eye than for your whole body to be thrown into hell, that does suggest an afterlife with you as the same person you are now.

But it has to be noted that the idea of soul we are using is much closer to the Hellenic (Greek) concept.

Souls' Witnesses

• What happens to the spirit when a person dies?

Psalm 146:4 "His spirit goes out, he goes back to his ground; in that day his thoughts do perish."

But I mean, even IF the bible mentioned "souls" then this far too little to be enlightening.

soul, mind, spirit...?

fatpie42:
"What good is it for a man to gain the world yet to forfeit his soul?" I thought Jesus said that in the Bible?

...Wait, wasn't that George Harrison? (Within You, Without You - Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band - 'We were talking about the love that's gone so cold, and the people who gain the world and lose their soul...') Wink

The word 'soul' has changed its meaning so much over the centuries... At one point, psyche was translated as 'soul' in Greek texts, but as we see today, after Freud and Jung, psyche is more 'mind' than 'soul.' To us, the English word 'soul' tends to mean 'spirit,' or something like it, which in those same Greek texts, would probably find similar meaning in the word pneuma. The two words, psyche and pneuma, were very different to the Greek writers and readers of them, however. Pneuma was a part of human existence that could only be reached through psyche.

Today, the word 'soul' is practically meaningless. It's a shame, really. We 'sell our souls to Satan,' we 'save our souls,' we feel things 'in our souls' and we even have 'Rubber Souls.' (I am sorry, but it seems I couldn't go without a second Beatles reference.)

Still, being spiritual or religious doesn't have to have anything to do with the 'soul,' in my view. You can still believe in a higher power and not believe in God. That might sound contradictory, and is probably rare, but I think it is entirely possible.

Much to learn, I still have.

Higher souls

You can believe in immortal souls (e.g. each one of the forum users is an immortal soul, with an unhealthy attachment to the body). That would be religious

You can believe in immortal gods while the forum users are just intelligent apes. Would be religious, too.

Any belief system that believes in more than just matter could be called religious.

Re: i am not religious

the anomaly:
in fact it is my belief that humans invented reilgion and god etc in order to deny the fact that we are but mere mortal and that belief of heaven and the after life is for those who cannot cope with the possibility that after they die...they are nothing

I agree with this, that's why I don't believe in the heaven depicted in the bible. Death as in nothingness, could be for the best. And who are you to care if you're nothingness? You can't care so caring at all about death is pointless. Live life to the full. But there is allways possibility for higher beings, wether they be human cloning aliens or unseen essences we call spirits.
