»Philosophy and Religion is a waste of time«

knn:
I cannot help myself, but everytime I see an old philosophy student with a long beard or someone dressed like a gothic I have the instant idea "Yup, the study of philosophy and the answers by religion have failed again".

Is this true? Is philosophy and religion just fuel for goths?

(Why becoming a goth should be such a bad thing I'm not sure, but I reckon Knn will probably give some comment)

no its not...philosophy is for people who want to learn more about religion and other beliefs on the world. its good for someone who is intersted in argueing over different beliefs...i took philo 101 and it was sorta intersting i got a D in the class cause i skipped it so much. the religion part was the most interesting...no goths were in that class either..alot of chirstians i think...at least it seemed that way i know 7 of the 25 people were and im guessing a few more were too

Philosophy

Philosophy/Religion is one of the most important subjects.

But it's a pity that philosophers sometimes don't have a better life. Running around with long beards and other signs of separation from society. So instead of a greater understanding they seem to be in confusion despite (or because of?) the hundreds of philosophy opinions.

Instead of clarity you get a mess.

However one can study philosophy as a "study subject". As a "museum of human thoughts". But then it's mere history.

Was there anything about religion as fuel for goths? knn's post said "OR". I am kinda surprised also how goths led immediately to religion failing to give answers, but it doesn't look like it said religion is only a fuel for goths either.

I don't know why this topic is titled "Philosophy and Religion is a waste of time", 'cause I don't think religion is absolutely the same as philosophy and I don't think it's useless. Philosophy however is in my opinion approximately like knn says,

I have seen a lot of students and professors of philosophy. Not all of them were bearded, but they all did have a strangely lost look about them, as if they are not sure where they are.
I had a two year course on philosophy at the university. Was very impressive and even interesting, especially when it was about Eastern philosophies and ancient Greeks, but then... It all looks like the Eastern have found their philosophy long time ago and now just live with it, and the West is running in circles, trying to invent... something they don't even know what. Some kind of an answer to all question?

The most upsetting thing about it is that (for me at least) it makes no practical sense whatsoever. It's good as an addition to your general curriculum, but living with it?

After some years of looking for answers those who study it seem to forget what the questions actually were.

I don't see any practical point in it, at least now. is there anything new that could be invented? Hardly. Unless it comes from the other field of study than philosophy itself.

I think my favorite philosopher, David Hume, can summarize the way in which we should approach philosophy:

"Be a philosopher; but, amidst all your philosophy, be still a man."

And that means what?
