So I was there panicking as the download dribbled along. There was a good chance I might not have it in time But It finished about an hour ago, so I threw it on as fast as I could so I didn't miss out. The first message when I signed in iwas Funcom extends the free offer on Anarchy Online into 2006
14 January, 2005 Funcom announces that the free Anarchy Online offer has been a tremendous success and will be fully extended throughout all of 2005 and into 2006. Anarchy Online now has more users than ever before, and the player feedback about the experience Funcom is offering has been fantastic. The game is setting records on an ongoing basis, with more active players now than seen in the month of launch more than 3,5 years ago. It’s currently the long-term goal for Funcom to make sure that the removal of subscription fees, client costs and the need to have a credit card when registering for Anarchy Online will become a permanent offering, making sure that anyone curious about the heralded qualities of the ultimate sci-fi MMORPG can play without any financial commitments. "The free initiative has been a tremendous success" says Ole Schreiner, Project Director for Anarchy Online. "Throngs of new players have entered the game and created a vibrant pioneer feeling for all those who see the wonders of Anarchy Online for the first time. Even though our servers and customer service have been under strong pressure, it’s assuring to see our technology holding up with such stability". "Seeing the great feedback from the free offer we are aiming to extend it into 2006 and beyond should it prove to be a continued success" said Trond Arne Aas, President and CEO of Funcom. "We are happy to be part of something which has sent such positive waves throughout the MMO communities, while significantly lowering the entrance barrier to enter Anarchy Online." This new and totally free approach allows everyone tired of elves, fairies and gnomes to enter a futuristic RPG world full of fun action totally free of cost, and makes it possible for all sci-fi fans to explore a world hailed as the best sci-fi MMO available today. Marl64: Here's a couple of screenies of my first taste of this. Heh, looks good enough, what's the deal with the free for a year thing? There's no way I could sign up now is there? My download got to 90 percent... then I accidently pressed some unknown keyboard combination to turn off the computer, so do I have a reason to download it again or do I have to wait a while till they finally make the game completely free? posted by hungarian kid |

hungarian kid: what's the deal with the free for a year thing? There's no way I could sign up now is there? Yeah, they extended it. Oh, I decided to jump in and see what the "real" world is like, so left "newbee island" for the mainland. I got an apartment in a place called Borealis, it's in Backyard Number 5 and is the first one on the right. There was no mention of rent - so I haven't pressed the point. Sadly, I didn't have much money so I couldn't afford any furniture except a Blue waste Paper Bin. Fortunately, I can use the bank to dump some of the accumulated Junk until I figure out what to do with it. In the meantime it's off to the job centre for some work [CLICK HERE TO VIEW THIS PICTURE] [CLICK HERE TO VIEW THIS PICTURE] [CLICK HERE TO VIEW THIS PICTURE] [CLICK HERE TO VIEW THIS PICTURE] [CLICK HERE TO VIEW THIS PICTURE] posted by Marl64 |

The ONEder Man: those other characters in the back ground in the pic with the lady are the ALL oter people? or are those computer characters? All but the big white droid (back left) and the silver droid (right) were players. But remember this is just a small part of one street in one town. Crossfade: Sounds a riot, i want a bin! It's like a radio, you can tune it to what you want to hear. At the moment I have it set to "Vicinity" (as indicated below the chat window) so that I see messages from people close by - useful for picking up tips. But you can select to listen only to people on your side, in your team, or you can "tune in" to a particular channel (a bit like IRC). You can also subscribe or unsubscribe to particular channels such as news, shopping etc. which keep giving announcements and updates of the status of the war, what's on offer etc. posted by Marl64 |

There are plenty of tips for the game online, but I thought I'd add stuff I haven't seen mentioned that gave me problems. Before you pick anything up, look at it to make sure you can use it - Some items are "non drop" which means you can't drop them anywhere on "newbee island" and end up carrying them around for no reason until you reach the mainland. Even crap looking stuff can have uses - At first you can't attack other players so are resigned to hunting wildlife for skill and goodies. Even stuff like animal remains can often be used to make other stuff, like weapon enhancements or shields. Whenever you kill something, always check the remains - you can pick up some usefull stuff (though why a Salamander would be carrying boots is beyond me Don't waste money buying stuff you don't need - there's better stuff on the mainland and you'll need the money more there. Like most RPGs, your character has levels. You gain experience points from killing stuff and doing stuff to increase levels. With each new level you get a number of Improvement points to enhance your characters abilities. I've included a list of how what those points can be used on... ...the underlying motive of the game? you mentioned a war and there looks like lots of robots so i'm guessing this thing borrows heavily from the matrix? posted by Crossfade |
