Alright, so I'm having problems with my harddrive! Basically, I have 2 harddrives, an 80 gig and 40 gig, and all up I'm using 101 gigs but My Computer tells me otherwise! I open the My Computer Icon and it tells me one has 800 megs free and the other 100, instead of the horde of gigabytes I should have free, and what makes it more frustrating is deleting stuff doesn't effect the shown size, infact I can only seem to lessen the amount of space left! I can't defragment properly either, I need 15% free space to do that, and that amount can't be reached! Any ideas on how I could fix this? posted by hungarian kid |

Crossfade: ...emptying the temp folder in C:\Windows, that can store a shed load of rubbish That's not my problem though, my problem is that even if I delete stuff space isn't freed up! I check the properties of all my stuff seperately and I should have more space free then My Computers telling me! I need to know why deleting stuff isn't making it think there's more space! posted by hungarian kid |

And I've tried uninstalling games I've bought, deleting movies, deleting anything really! Quote: ..work backwards, when did it start doing this and did you install anything beforehand? This started a few days ago, and I installed Rollercoastertycoon3, and I recently installed Cliprex DVD Player Pro, don't think they would have anything to do with it! posted by hungarian kid |

We need to be clear about what we mean when we talk about disks and drives. It helps tracking down problems if we can see how one relates to the other. Ok, first things first, What version of windows? If it's Windows XP or 2000, you can get the layout of your hard disks from the control panel => 1. Go to the control panel 2. Select Administrative Tools 3. Select Computer Management You should have a window with a tree down the left. 4. Under the storage part of the tree, click Disk Management This will show you the layout of your physical disks against drive letters and stuff. It will also show you if there is unused disk space - i.e. disk space not allocated to any drives. Take a screen grab and post it - I've included mine as an example. If you don't have windows XP or 2000, you need a third party tool such as partition magic to see the same layout. [CLICK HERE TO VIEW THIS PICTURE] posted by Marl64 |

knn: Whether you tried some of the freeware progs I mentioned in my post above. Ah I downloaded Total Commander and couldn't see how it'd fix my problem so I downloaded a trial of Disk Size Manager which scanned the drives and basically came up with the same thing I'm getting! I've used about 100 gigs but I can't used the other 20, instead it just says I have about 1 gig free! In the Drives information one of the drives was highlighted red, like there might be something wrong with it! posted by hungarian kid |

Windows XP hoards disk space for itself, so you might need to reclaim some. 1) Reserved Space for System Restore By default, windows XP reserves 12% of the total disk space for any NTFS volumes. Suppose your C: drive is an NTFS volume and is 10 Gig in size. You've installed loads of stuff and filled half of it, you should have 5 Gig left. But Windows reserves 12% for itself so you lose an extra 1.2 Gig there. You can change or Disable system restore for any or all your drives... - In explorer, right-click on "My Computer" and from the menu select Properties (this is a shortcut, the long way is to go to the control panel and select "system") - Select the "System Restore" Tab Since system restore is intended to track changes to software, drivers etc, you only need it enabling on drives you install software to - disable it for all other drives. The amount you reserve on drives where you do install stuff is up to you, I reserve 200 Meg as there are not many things I install that are this big. If you are you the solutions can be found on the microsoft website, they suggest either updating the System BIOS , Using Fdisk or running setup from your XP installation CD to determine disk space. posted by zesja |
