How about a mind trip? "Imagine that there is no god" This doesn't seem much but we live in a world full of religions like a fish in water. Thus in case you have been surrounded by "godly religions" all your life this is an interesting practice:

Well, if you were still completely logical, you would come as far as Plato's idea of the "just man." (which practically describes Jesus, several years before He came). posted by stinkz |

In Plato's Republic, he discusses why being Just is better, in every circumstance, than being unjust. He goes on to explain, that even if being just means appearing unjust, and being made to suffer for it, it would be the better path. As he describes the just person being made to suffer for his just actions, I had to take a step back for a second, to go "woh." This man is practically describing the life of Christ. You really should take the time to read the whole thing. It is in this same work that he also rejects the ideas of his time period, that there were multiple anthropomorphic gods, in favor of the rational outlook, that there is One God who is perfect. posted by stinkz |

I can't see how you can prove something like that with logic. It comes close to try to prove that there IS a god. posted by knn |

Plato also describes his idea of 'utopia' which is basically a facist regime. I think you'll find that Christianity is the way it is BECAUSE of Platonism. It is not that Plato or Socrates had some kind of ability to predict the future or were some kind of 'anonymous Christians'. posted by fatpie42 |

fatpie42: Plato also describes his idea of 'utopia' which is basically a facist regime. If you knew anything at all, you would most certainly know that the Just State he spoke of, was merely a metaphor for comparison with the human soul. However, even if taken litterally, with true philosopher-kings, even a dictatorship would be a good form of government. Everyone knows that a benevolent dictatorship is one of the best, most efficient forms of government. However, since oppressive dictatorship is also one of the worst, dictatorships are not tried. fatpie42: I think you'll find that Christianity is the way it is BECAUSE of Platonism. Wrong again. One thing that is supposed, however, is that Plato had seen a copy of Deuteronomy... because of the similarities to his work "Laws." posted by stinkz |

stinkz: in favor of the rational outlook, that there is One God who is perfect. "Pure spirit is pure lie. . . . So long as the priest, that denier, calumniator and poisoner of life by profession, still counts as a higher kind of human being, there can be no answer to the question: 'what is truth?' One has already stood truth on its head when the conscious advocate of denial and nothingness counts as the representative of 'truth' . . ." posted by fatpie42 |

"Here are priests; but although they are mine enemies pass them quietly and with sleeping swords! Even among them there are heroes; many of them have suffered too much — so they want to make others suffer. Bad enemies are they; nothing is more revengeful than their meekness. And readily doth he soil himself who toucheth them. But my blood is related to theirs; and I want withal to see my blood honoured in theirs." posted by fatpie42 |
