»Playstation 3 and XBOX 2--Next Generation consoles«

This is a thread to discuss the excitement of the next gen systems, rumors, specs, release dates etc. But before you all chime in I'll post Bill Gates talking about X-Box 2 and the rumors about playstation 3's CELL chip
Gates Talks with CNET at CES
Several topics are discussed, but here are the Xbox 2 Q & As:

What are some of the primary goals with Xbox 2?
Broadening the market, having media capabilities that when there's a PC, we connect up to that. This whole story of the Windows Media Connect and how all the formats and rights management and that simple Media Center menu that's just got TV, photos, music right there--those are common elements we're bringing to all the home devices.
We didn't do Xbox just to do a video game; we did it to be part of our vision of the digital lifestyle, and with the next generation, we really get to go there. In the first generation, we had one simple goal, which was to establish credibility as a great video game platform. We've done that. Actually, the last few months in the United States, we outsold Sony with the PlayStation. So even though they have the biggest installed base, we are a very strong, credible No. 2 in that. As we go into this next generation, it's much broader.

Yes, great video gaming but videogaming for a broader set of people, more communications, more media, more connectivity. And at the same time, we move up to things like high-definition graphics and wireless that the chip breakthroughs allow us to get to.

So just for the games alone you'd go, wow, but the concept now of bringing in your music, your media, connecting to the PC, connecting Xbox Live to Messenger--that just makes it a very big deal.

It's a full entertainment center, basically.
That's right. So Media Center PC and Xbox become totally complementary. You've seen a bit of that, where we let you take music from PCs and put it into game titles, and we have this extender concept where the Media Center can project through the Xbox, but that's just the start of what we can do there.

One thing that's kind of intriguing in Xbox 2 is you're participating a little more on the design of the silicon.
Well, we have some key partners that we've announced. ATI and IBM are the key chip partners, and there are some others. But I'd say our sophistication is much higher in this second generation. So every level, what we're doing in tools, what we're doing in Live, the way we're working with the publishers, the way that we've gotten involved in the hardware design--we're being very coy about when and all that, but I'm certainly excited when it comes time to show at how much smarter we are getting to do it a second time with the team that's been built there.

Any interest in handhelds?
We are not in the handheld space. We watch the intense competition of Sony, Nintendo, Nokia--whoever comes along with interest. Our portable gaming will be focused on things like getting onto the phones, getting onto portable PCs, but our Xbox team is focused on the TV-connected console. And the fact that Sony's a little distracted with that may let us do all the better in the next generation.

as for playstation 3 the big talk is this new CELL chip you can read a little bit about it here
Some details of the chip inside Sony's PlayStation 3 have been revealed.
Sony, IBM and Toshiba have released limited data about the so-called Cell chip that will be able to carry out trillions of calculations per second.

The chip will be made of several different processing cores that work on tasks together.

The PlayStation 3 is expected in 2006 but developers are expecting to get prototypes early next year to tune games that will appear on it at launch.

Early glimpse

The three firms have been working on the chip since 2001 but before now few details have been released about how it might function.

In a joint statement the three firms gave hints about how the chip will work but fuller details will be released in February next year at the International Solid State Circuits Conference in San Francisco.

Current PC architecture is nearing its limits

Ken Kutaragi, Sony
The three firms claim that the Cell chip will be up to 10 times more powerful than existing processors.

When put inside powerful computer servers, the Cell consortium expects it to be capable of handling 16 trillion floating point operations, or calculations, every second.

The chip has also been refined to be able to handle the detailed graphics common in games and the data demands of films and broadband media.

IBM said it would start producing the chip in early 2005 at manufacturing plants in the US. The first machines off the line using the Cell processor will be computer workstations and servers.

A working version of the PS3 is due to be shown off in May 2005 but a full launch of the next generation console is not expected to start until 2006.

As well as being inside the PlayStation 3, the chip will also be used inside high-definition TVs and powerful computers.

"In the future, all forms of digital content will be converged and fused onto the broadband network," said Ken Kutaragi, Chief Operating Officer of Sony.

"Current PC architecture is nearing its limits."

as for release dates and specs check out
don't know how reliable this info is, but it's something

I think I'll also make a poll as to which next gen system you might buy over the other Aaah, is there anything better than to post here and to drink something

I'm buying both...

...but i know for a fact that Xbox2 will kick PS3 in the nads in terms of performance. 10 times more powerfull than current processors? what type of processors? ones in apple macs? White laugh

i was told that the next x-box will not be so easy to mod like they are now. anyone hear this also?

They always make it harder but someone always gets round the protection, Sony actually said the PS2 would be un-crackable before it was launched, shows you what they know White laugh

Microsoft were considering not putting a harddrive in the X2 because of the modding that can be done to the origonal. I actually think Microsoft should take a leaf out of Sony's book and realise that if your console is easy to get copied games for it sells like hot cakes, sad but true

yeah, i heard that too.

and it is true. even though (i think) the xbox is a better console, everyone i know with an xbox bought it just because you can modify them to save games on it or whatever. they rent games copy them on to the hard drive, and return the game. saves money on games. but helps the console itself sell.

who knows, maybe the games might someday require a key code in order to play (like some PC programs), but that would harm the sale of the console...meh, i don't know what im talking about...

all you really need is 88mph. that's when the flux compacitor starts to work.

I think...

...the next evolution of consoles will be purely online content, you don't buy disks but download chunks of the game as you play, it might take five/ten years but by then we will all pretty much have super fast net connections so consoles will just become online game boxes and games on cd/dvd/cartridge will be a thing of the past.

wow, i was discussing this exact same thing last night! and how it is very possible, i mean, with MxO i reserved a copy, got a pre-order box, and in the box i got a card with a web address. once you go to the address you put in the code that was on the card, register an email address, they email you a special link where you can download the game...the link can only be used once. i can see this happening with the future of video games...pity all the rental stores might suffer.

Erch, Rare are bastard betrayers! I like Perfect Dark though, pretty damn good! But all Rare games on the Xbox have so far completely sucked, they NEED Nintendo!

I'm not buying either one! Doesn't anyone notice the absurd similiarites between computers and Xbox? I can see the price factor difference but computers still kick the crap out of Xbox! And Playstations have always been full of crap games with the good ones not being much of a reason to buying the console!

I'll be sticking with Nintendo and be waiting for the Nintendo Revolution !

And check that out for a handheld -

for me. I've always been a supporter of Sony and will continue my allegiance for the next-gen consoles. I'm not concerned w/the specs of performance...it's all about the games. And regardless of who you support, you have to admit that XBox would be dead w/o Halo.

You're old man, didn't you used to play Mario? I was playing Mario back when I was 3, that's how bloody dedicated I am!

Playing Nintendo is not a hobby... it's a way of life! White laugh

Actually, it's 50 percent true! Everyone I know has gotten an Xbox for Halo, infact Halo pretty much sold the first Xboxes, you have to admit the Xbox has just had a plethora of shite games since it was released! Not as many as the PS2 but atleast the PS2 has some good games to make up for it!

Honestly, I'm probably leaning more in the PS3s favour against Xbox2, people just don't know how to use the Xbox engine to its full performance when making a game, it's just kind of depressing with all that wasted potential!

same here, that's why i bought a gamecube when all of my friends bought an xbox. i wanted to play all the new zelda games!

everyone that i have known with a ps2 or xbox has had some type of trouble with them at some point.

i have to agree about the halo statement. i forgot about that, the only game that everyone who had an x box ever talked about when they were first released, and all the hype over halo 2. i think i would say halo sold most of the systems, and the other thing that sold them was the fact that you could mod them. or atleast that is what i have noticed.

The Xbox...

...did really need Halo to sell it early on. It's ironic that X2 is out end of this year and the origonal is just starting to get into it's stride. For every game the PS2 has, Xbox has one to counter it...

Gran Turismo3/Project Gotham Racing/2
Final Fantasy/Knights of the old republic
Resident evil/Silent Hill

and soon to be released Forza Motor Sport which judging from early playtests is probably the most realistic racing game ever outside of GTR on pc
