h_o_h: (1) What's so "Great" about it? Making everybody call your country "Great" is just obnoxious. The name Great Britain (in French, Grand Bretagne), meaning the island of Britain, was invented to distinguish it from little Britain (Brittany, Fr. Bretagne), where some of the descendants of the ancient Britons still live. h_o_h: (2) King Henry VIII, Lord Protector Oliver Cromwell, and King George III (the American Revolution king) were all obviously sociopaths, but many British people still admire them out of blind patriotism. Coming from a sociopath, this is a moot point. h_o_h: (3) They stole Madonna. They stole her? Was it a cat burglary, or was it a smash and dash? The truth is that she preferred Great Britain over the US. So you should hate Madonna, not Great Britain. h_o_h: (4) My best friend is from London and he is currently dating a girl who once turned me down for a date. What a surprise --- a girl turned down a sociopath to date a Brit. Can't say that I blame her. h_o_h: (5) Fatpie42 and his anti-American agitprop. Fatpie42 gives me one more reason to like Great Britain --- a country that produces people like him has got to be a good place to live. posted by Tiefling |

MindSlavery Florida: (1) What's so "Great" about it? Making everybody call your country "Great" is just obnoxious. Lol! You think that's bad! I live in a town called "Royal Tunbridge Wells", how sickening can they get? *yuck* MindSlavery Florida: (2) King Henry VIII, Lord Protector Oliver Cromwell, and King George III (the American Revolution king) were all obviously sociopaths, but many British people still admire them out of blind patriotism. I've never known anyone admire Henry VIII. MindSlavery Florida: (3) They stole Madonna. Hehe, why she decides to live in Britain I have NO idea. MindSlavery Florida: (4) My best friend is from London and he is currently dating a girl who once turned me down for a date. Lol! That sucks. One thing though, if he lives in London how is he dating a girl from America? Or if she is from Britain too, why are you surprised that she wouldn't want to date someone in America? Long distance relationships are quite problematic. MindSlavery Florida: (5) Fatpie42 and his anti-American agitprop. Oh... posted by fatpie42 |

Fatpie42: I've never known anyone admire Henry VIII. I learned something new, I guess Even while Cromwell ruled Britain he was hated because he set up an oppressive theocracy. Have you never heard the term "Lord protect us from Protectors"? Both Cromwell and Henry VIII were in the Top 100 British heroes in a nationwide poll by the BBC. I don't know how much clearer it can get than that. We have our villains in American history (Richard Nixon, Joseph McCarthy, and J. Edgar Hoover come to mind) but very few people here admire them, although admittedly there are some who think Nixon was a great president. That part of my post was basically a joke, but really you would not believe the amount of attention this guy gets from girls because of his accent. posted by MindSlavery Florida |

Anyway just after Cromwell it lists Alistair Crowley, the founder of satanism. I would expect the number of people admiring him to be a minority. Perhaps we could do with knowing how many votes out of the entire proportion of voters a person needed to enter the list... As a general rule people are unlikely to vote for Cromwell or Henry VIII (his father, Henry VII was a pretty clever guy though). posted by fatpie42 |

Fatpie42: Didn't you just contradict yourself? No. Just because some people admire Nixon does not mean that his degree of turpitude even approached that of Cromwell or Henry VIII such that Nixon could be compared to Cromwell or Henry VIII. So if some people in America admire Nixon, they are admiring a better person than the British people who voted Cromwell into the Top 10 Greatest Britons. After all, both Cromwell and Henry VIII were unelected dictators, while Nixon was actually elected president twice. Now it is possible to argue that the fact that Nixon was elected shows that the American electorate in 1968 and 1972 were in support of him, and Nixon does appear on the Discovery Channel's 100 Greatest Americans poll results. Again though, Cromwell was voted into the top 10 Britons in the BBC poll. Plus Nixon had his good points, even though he was corrupt. He went to China, etc. Cromwell had no good points, nor did Henry VIII. Please try not to confuse your homegrown despots with our elected morons. If Joe McCarthy had raised an army, engaged in a civil war, overthrown and beheaded President Eisenhower, established himself as a dictator, and then invaded and brutally subjugated Mexico, you might have an argument that McCarthy among our American villains (of which he was undoubtedly the worst) was as destructive as Cromwell. George W. Bush may be as despotic as Cromwell if the next three years end up like the last five, but the jury's still out. Anyhow we consider Bush British just because he takes such a special liking to Britain and because of the way the British go out of their way to accomodate his little adventures in the desert. Fatpie42: Anyway just after Cromwell it lists Alistair Crowley, the founder of satanism. That's complete bullshit. But to expose it as such would be offtopic. Fatpie42: I would expect the number of people admiring him to be a minority. Perhaps we could do with knowing how many votes out of the entire proportion of voters a person needed to enter the list... See above. Top 10 Greatest Britons. Oliver Cromwell. Especially popular with Ulster Unionists I imagine. Fatpie42: As a general rule people are unlikely to vote for Cromwell or Henry VIII (his father, Henry VII was a pretty clever guy though). See above regarding Cromwell. posted by MindSlavery Florida |
