Quote: Is sex such a crime? Yes, especially Catholics have a nearly "demonic" relationship to everything sexual.
What were acceptible dogmas a few years ago will maybe be the cornerstone of the end of the Catholic Church nowadays. posted by knn |

Many people seem to make the mistake of believing that the Roman Catholic Church is the single oldest denomination of Christianity. However, Orthodox Churches are just as old having been set up by the Patriarchs (of which the pope was just one). Now correct me if I am wrong, but I don't think the orthodox church shares the anti-sex view which (according to you Knn) is so prolific in the RCC. posted by fatpie42 |

No they don't share all views, and even if, their followers would even apply them less since many of the orthodox churches don't even have confessions. posted by knn |

We were talking about the RC anti-sex doctrine and whether it is shared by Orthodox Chruches. I fail to see how the use of confession is linked with that discussion... What am I missing? posted by fatpie42 |

If there are no confessions you cannot be kept in constant sin/ reminded of your sins whenever you meet your local priest. posted by knn |

You are talking about a Church with sermons lasting at least two hours every Sunday where the phrase 'Lord Have Mercy' is used constantly over and over again (amongst other times I think it is used three times in every corner of the room). There are PLENTY of reminders of personal sin in the Orthodox religion - even if there are no confessional boxes. I get the impression you don't know enough about the Orthodox Churches in order to compare them to Roman Catholicism. However, since you have not made your ignorance clear on this matter I get the impression that you are trying to give a false sense of knowledgability. Now that I know that you are no expert on Orthodox Churches could you tell me how well you think you know Roman Catholic doctrine and where you know about it from. (BTW my knowledge of Orthodox Christianity is from a theology course for which I received a first - my knowledge is still far from complete of course) posted by fatpie42 |

Quote: There are PLENTY of reminders of personal sin in the Orthodox religion - even if there are no confessional boxes. Yeah, I know, Muslim and Christian churches talk about sin and hell and heaven all the time. But I stand by my statement: No confession boxes, lesser sin. If you are supposed to confess each sunday (some do it every day) how you have sinned in thoughts, in feelings and in actions then this is a much more prominent reminder than the usual sin talks "Lord have mercy". Doesn't make an impression on me. But standing in a queue in front of the confession boxes DOES make an impression. Thus mortifying the flesh (to do penance) is typical for Catholics, and not for Orthodox. I have never heard of any Orthodox patriarch to wear torturing robes (= robes that scratch you all the time). Yet Catholic popes did. You can even get married (as a priest) in many orthodox religions, thus being married cannot be that "sinny" as it is in Catholic religion. posted by knn |

There's a group of people - basically the first monks - they had a special term for living a life of fasting and 'purification' which unfortunately I have forgotten. Anyway, there was plenty of self-deprival amongst these orthodox christians and it was encourages. However, they were normally laymen. The patriachs were spiritual leaders and hurting themselves on a regular basis would not help them be the spiritual leaders of the empire. posted by fatpie42 |

Yeah but I am talking about our times. The very first Jesus-followers were very sex-abstinent. Virgins joined the group to stay virgin. But that was basically a Jewish sect 2000 years ago. Plays no role nowadays. If you ask me, the big churches play a role now, and the big Muslim leaders, and even Bush. posted by knn |
