»How can I descale (= decalcify) a kettle?«

 I have a kettle (to make water hot) but now it's full of hard sediment (= scale = the thing that stays on the ground if you boil water). Does anyone have an effective method? I tried descalers, but the %&* products are not good enough  Pretty nothing has gone and I don't want to buy a new kettle.

 ...vinegar in warm water, leave it for as long as you like then rince thoroughly. To be honest, as soon as i see scale i replace the kettle but our water is pretty clean so i never get it anyway  posted by Crossfade |

Hi, I always use citric acid powder (acid from lemons). Put a little in the kettle with water. Bring to the boil and the limescale will soon be gone. Rinse a couple of times and use ...  posted by simtrinity |

 OK, case solved: I bought vinegar essence (= 70% vinegar. Normal vinegar is approx. 5%) and boiled it in the kettle. That solved the problem much faster and better than the "professional" descalers. However, the kitchen smelled liked vinegar for some time, thus you may want to boil that "juice" somewhere outside... posted by knn |

I bought a water purifier machine, where purified/destilled water is coming out. I use this new water to make tea. So it has no magnesium or calcium in it anymore. In fact, this water itself can descale a kettle posted by knn |

Moreover: Where do you have your info from? I checked it at the page of the Water Quality Regulator for Scotland at  Your info seems to be based on propaganda obviously. actually if you examine the results correctly you will see there were 155,427 tests on supply at tap of which only 0.86% failed to meet the required standard of which almost all were on colour and iron content which have no effect on health out of those 155,427 tests there were only 135 failures at tap for coliform tests and only 24 for faecal coliform almost all of the failures were resultant from service reservoirs (underground and grass covered) which my own water source is not only 2 of these failures were recorded at the reservoirs that service my area...1 for total coliforms and 1 for iron content i'll stick with scottish water thank you very much...not to mention that i've never had to decalcify my kettle...ever posted by the anomaly |

Sorry, I prefer CLEAN water without ANYTHING inside, not only "water with allowed amounts of X, Y and Z" And no country can deliver that. Even if, the pipes TO your house and the tanks of your house will ruin it. posted by knn |
