nocturnal_anonymous: You may think these are things not worth saying, but think about it. They're certainly not done because of women just feel like it... Of course they do. As if someone forces men to shave their faces. Agent Zero: not really, i know alot of grils who do that stuff for other reasons...like they hate having hairy legs. Yup. Women shave their legs voluntarily. posted by knn |

knn: Is that a serious question? It could be. What did they do before bras were invented? But there is a difference between human females and other mammals though, because humans are the only species which have mammary glands which are permanently big, and not just when they're lactating. But it couold be a technological advance though. Primitive humans managed without optometry, but now that some devices are available they've become indispensable. But another thing, women will NEVER have 'equal status', just complementary status at best, because of the fundamental differences between the genders. And male-ness is basically, biologically, exploitative. posted by ralph_angelus |

knn: Of course they do. As if someone forces men to shave their faces. In general, men in the USA/Europe/AUS/etc don't "choose" to shave their face. They do it because women like it, because society deems it as a clean, professional look, because many companies even demand that you do it. On the flip side, in many countries, if you don't have a full beard, you basically aren't a mature man. If men didn't have to shave, then many wouldn't. Sure individuals can enjoy shaving, no one is disagreeing. But society has alot of influence on this issue, just like on women shaving. If you grow up being taught to one day have a beard and never shave, then that is the norm for you. And if you grown being taught that shaving is the norm, then that is what the majority will often do. posted by volonteshiva |

nocturnal_anonymous: For example, why do women have to wear bras? knn: Is that a serious question? Why wouldn't this be a serious question? Society tells women they should wear a bra. It keeps their breasts from bouncing around as much, prevents nipple erection to some degree from showing, It supports the weight of large breasts, it can make breasts look sexier/bigger and give more cleavage. But bras aren't "necessary". There is a reason women burned them in the 60s/70s. Many see them as a control that society/men place on them. posted by volonteshiva |

Running around thin and pale for the violent pleasures of their "superwives". Just wait... And indeed there have been matriarchal societies and that have done well. They have been peaceful as well as brutal. Male dominance w/ increasing female power is the way of the world now, but it isn't written in our genetic code that society has to be this way. Women can be the ones in power and have been in the past. posted by volonteshiva |

Agent Zero: yeah but its there choice..who is feeding you these things that are not true. No one. And they are not false. sangu: society's pressure; everyone's doing it so why don't i do it? Well, why did it becomes "society"'s view in the first place? volonteshiva: Society tells women it's sexy/normal to shave your legs. There are women in Europe and South America that are fine not shaving their legs or armpits because their society doesn't demand it of them for them to be "normal". You can substitute every word in this sentence with the word "men" and it wouldn't change the meaning of it. Agent Zero: one girl i know didn't shave for a week and said it creeped her out to touch a hairy leg that was hers Well, of course, after a while, it becomes a habit. And no one likes changing habits... knn: Is that a serious question? Then let me answer with another question: Why do children have to wear diapers? Why do divers have to wear masks? Are those serious questions? Children wear diapers because they are not potty trained yet and might make a big mess. Divers wear masks so they can see more clearly underwater. I don't see how any of this relates to women wearing bras. Diapers and masks are "technology" used to make cleaning up after the child and swimming more effective/efficient. Do bras make living more effective/efficient for women? I don't see how that works. knn: Some guys have to shave their face 3x a day (for example politicians) Yes, I've thought about shaving before...but I've always thought that it's just more convenient for men if they're beards are shaved. I mean, doesn't a beard/moustache get in the way sometimes? Like food items get stuck in it or other things like that? posted by nocturnal_anonymous |

nocturnal_anonymous: I mean, doesn't a beard/moustache get in the way sometimes? Like food items get stuck in it or other things like that? They do it because women like it, because society deems it as a clean, professional look, because many companies even demand that you do it. Yup, I've been told befor "you'd look great without that goatee" or "that goatee makes you look gay" and my response is basically "I don't care" when I'm thinking "fuck off you shallow bastard", I shave my moustache because I personally don't like it! I keep my goatee because I personally like it and want to grow it, really you should do what ever makes you comfortable and not worry about what other people think! I really don't have a problem with women with hairy arms or legs, it's a pretty small thing and barely noticable! It is something created by trying to be attractive but not only to men, other women will treat you like shit because of it! People are pretty shallow! nocturnal_anonymous: Do bras make living more effective/efficient for women? volonteshiva: It keeps their breasts from bouncing around as much, prevents nipple erection to some degree from showing, It supports the weight of large breasts Those are valid enough reasons, some people actually get back pains from having big breasts so something to support them probably reduces the pain a fair deal! posted by hungarian kid |

volonteshiva: But bras aren't "necessary". There is a reason women burned them in the 60s/70s. Bras are necessary if you have a big bust and require the support for certain activities. Wouldn't you agree? nocturnal_anonymous: Do bras make living more effective/efficient for women? I don't see how that works. Say you are doing sports or other activities where you need some form of support, its certainly makes life a lot easier and less painful if you are not bouncing around all over the place posted by zesja |

zesja: Bras are necessary if you have a big bust and require the support for certain activities. Wouldn't you agree? Well, yes if you have size C or bigger and are going to do all kinds of bouncy activities, then sure a bra is useful. I am not really doubting it's usefulness. But you could still do those activities w/o. There are still many tribes where the women don't wear anything from the waste up... However, they aren't really doing alot of running and whatnot though. Is a bra practical for larger-breasted women, yes. And yes, it's likely more comfortable, and draws less attention than no bra, etc etc However a woman with really large breats, D or higher, is likely to have back problems regardless of a bra. posted by volonteshiva |

nocturnal_anonymous: Because so many things of women's lives are still done according to men's point of view.
For example, why do women have to wear bras? Why do women have to shave their legs? Stop the pity routine...both sexes have to do things to be "attractive" to others. For example: - Men put chemicals on their heads, wear toupees and get hair plugs because "if you're bald, you're not attractive" - Men are made to feel ashamed if they have a hairy chest or are hairy in general. - Men w/ripped abs, biceps, etc. are shown in commercials as the "definition of man." - Razor companies make commercials saying that women don't like unshaven men. and the list goes on and on... It's not just one side setting the "norm." It's both sides. posted by GP |

GPieters: Stop the pity routine...both sexes have to do things to be "attractive" to others. Yeah!, Well said Sometimes making the comparison is a mistake and leads to no end of arguments. I remember one time discussing if limiting occupation by gender is sexist and we got onto all sorts of daft stuff like "women should be allowed to work in Mens Toilets", and I was all "why would you want to?" Everyone should recognise their own strengths and be proud of them, stop trying to match mine. ralph_angelus: women will NEVER have 'equal status', just complementary status at best, because of the fundamental differences between the genders.
