 GPieters: Stop the pity routine...both sexes have to do things to be "attractive" to others. thank you for saying this. you need to talk to my girlfriend. she has been taking sociology courses and is absolutely in LOVE with them. especially the gender studies. i get to hear all the time about how women have it soo bad and men simply do nothing and have nothing to worry about. but whenever i counter with something like what you just said i get, well, that's just an anecdote or an anomaly. she went so far, just last night, to say that urinals in mens bathrooms were invented so that men can have an "upper hand" on women in something else...we can pee standing up. and the urinals only promote the difference between man and woman. i told her that if there was a way for women to pee standing up as easily as men, there would be a similar invention in womens bathrooms also. i have to contsantly ask why she believes everything in her books without question, that those books only point out one side of whatever it is that they discuss. she tells me that we (men) don't have to live up to the perfect image of a barbie doll...so i tell her no, but we do have the "perfect image" to live up to also... ...rich, successful, muscular and buff, large penises...check your email and see how much junkmail you have about breast implants and compare that to the viagra/penis enlargement mail...even on tv (in the US) all the time with the "this is bob, his wife has not been satisfied lately, he feels like crap, then he starting using enzyte and now the misses is feeling good and he has a better self esteem and the whole neighborhood loves him now" (yes i know they don't say those exact things, but it is implied) where are the breast implant commercials? in movies all the time with women making statements like "we tell men that we don't care about size so that they wont feel bad, we know the truth, don't we ladies" or the magazines, 'what women say and what they really mean': "you have a nice sized penis"="i don't want to make you feel bad and tell you that its small", "we don't care about size"="damn why cant you be bigger?" and so on. we are brainwashed into thinking that we have to be great performers in bed and if we cant "live up to" it then the girl doesnt want to have anything to do with us. (maybe this is why men can be studs when sleeping with a lot of people and women are sluts...men are getting experience and its ok? because he will now be better?..just a thought) we have things beaten into our brains all the time too that we feel we have to live up to. we were at dinner the other night and just met a group of people, that included three slightly overweight girls, and she began to preach to them about how they want to change their body and look like a barbie doll because society tells them that, and how every woman has something about themselves that they want to change (i countered with, i think everyone, male and female, have something about themselves that they would like to change)...they looked at her like she was crazy. yes, women have hardships...but so do men, but the thing is, men are lot allowed to talk about them. we are supposed to be strong and not let things get to us. we cannot show our emotions, its a sign of weakness. we cannot complain about these things. (these are stereotypes that men have to live up to, just like women have to live up to theirs) she basically wants there to be no difference between men and women, and she hates when i tell her that men and women are different and always will be. i told her (about the peeing thing) to take it up with God for the way he designed us and not hate on men. men and women are not equal. this is true. but we are different. as long as we separate men, women, black, white, (instead of human, human, human and human) it will be very hard to have equality in anything, gender or race. posted by allone |

Perhaps you should ask, why it's an advantage? And if you examine a typical working class mens urinal in the UK, you'd find that a lot of men CAN'T pee standing up
It's all about what's important to you, personally I'd trade the "peeing while standing" thing for the Babylons anyday - 'cos for me, having them gives Women the upper hand everytime

I complete agree w/you. Also, I know exactly what you're talking about in regards to your girlfriend. One of my friend's (Big J) girl used to be exactly the same way. She used to be so stubborn in arguments w/us that we'd (Don & I) would get so frustrated that we'd have to leave the house! Eventually though, she started to see past what the books were saying and began to notice the obviousness of our side. I think she rebelled at first because like you said in your previous post, their taking what's written as gospel. When you annihilate their argument, of course they're going to rebel. Marl64: That's the good thing about a forum like this, we all exchange ideas "blindly", we form our oppinions of each other based on what we write, rather than how we look. this is very true! we don't judge others on any physical appearance at all, but instead read peoples words. i think its a good thing. in this place, sex/age/race/weight/nothing matters, what matters is what you write. I mean, the truth hurts. oh yeah, i totally agree! i told her the same thing, i said, "when you take something that someone believes in, no matter what or who it is, and you prove it false or make them start to question what they "know", they are going to get very defensive and lash out" its true. i told her that its hard for her to see the mens side because she isnt one. i asked her to, if she is going to go off on society, then go off on society, not men. men have hard times too, don't just cry for one because you belong to that group, but complain about all the others. if you are going to be soo passionate about this, don't omit some and focus on what affects you personally. she eventually came to realize that what i was saying is true and we came to an agreement...at about 3:30am... (i get soo embarrassed when she tells black people that they want to be white because our society tells them that white is perfect but that's for a different thread)

 nocturnal_anonymous: why do women have to wear bras? They don't have to. They CHOOSE to! Men would be quite happy for women not to wear bras, but most women find themselves more comfortable wearing them. I'll agree that women don't have equal status, but the idea of equal status is a complete fiction since there are inherent differences in men and women (mostly social) that women are just as unlikely to give up as men are! But I also accept that there are still many problems that should have been overcome and are not. The 'glass ceiling' problem in business for example. A woman will always have trouble getting to higher positions in a company, mostly because businesses are worried that the woman will have children (when a major figure in a business has to go on leave for several months this can be quite awkward). My girlfriend constantly finds herself judged for studying engineering. There are so many people around who are still stuck in old outdated stereotypes. But I don't think expecting women to wear bras is one of them  ...
