And YES, even in America, the "land of the free." Why do I say this? Because so many things of women's lives are still done according to men's point of view. For example, why do women have to wear bras? Why do women have to shave their legs? You may think these are things not worth saying, but think about it. They're certainly not done because of women just feel like it... posted by nocturnal_anonymous |

interesting point, though it has been brought up onlyabout 16 million times in my eng. class and hist. class during the anchor. nocturnal_anonymous: Because so many things of women's lives are still done according to men's point of view.
For example, why do women have to wear bras? Why do women have to shave their legs? hmm, i would think its more of a personal opinion, a woman's opinion. i don't see how men fit into that. posted by sangu |

Why do women have to shave their legs? sangu: hmm, i would think its more of a personal opinion, a woman's opinion. i don't see how men fit into that. well, alot of women wear sexy underwear and shave their legs for men. They may indeed like things, and come to wear/do these out of habit, but w/o men around many ladies aren't likely to wear sexy underwear and may stop shaving their legs for a while. posted by volonteshiva |

Precisely my point. Women do these things so they can be attractive to men. Why do you think girls in China used to be forced to bind their feet and wear those freakin tiny shoes? It's because they needed to appear "sexy" to men in order for them to be married off. Nowadays, of course, it's different, but the concept behind these things are still the same. posted by nocturnal_anonymous |

1. men, like NA pointed out. women do this to make them look "appeasing". 2. their own preference. some women prefer to do that, simply because they prefer that alternative 3. society's pressure; everyone's doing it so why don't i do it? it seems like the normal thing to do. also relates to Agent Zero's comment about fashion magazines and commercials telling you what to look like. so overall, it is either a combination of these factors or simply one of them that make women do what they do. posted by sangu |

Agent Zero: not really, i know alot of grils who do that stuff for other reasons...like they hate having hairy legs. Society tells women it's sexy/normal to shave your legs. There are women in Europe and South America that are fine not shaving their legs or armpits because their society doesn't demand it of them for them to be "normal". Now with that said, I would prefer to be with a woman that shaved those 2 areas. Now sure, women that shave their legs don't like having hairy legs, but if they grew up being told it was ok to go "natural", they would likely be fine with it. posted by volonteshiva |

Who do you think runs/works at YM/Vogue? 100% women? Have you ever looked at/read one of those magazines? They set girls/women up to want to look like the models on the cover/inside. And those women being talked about/gossiped about are not doctors/scientists/etc. They are models/musicians/movie stars. People committed to looking good/sexy. posted by volonteshiva |

I'll say it again... sure a women that shaves her legs wants to keep doing that. But have her raised somewhere where they don't shave their legs, and it's likely she wouldn't care that much. posted by volonteshiva |

I am not exclusively married to positition 3. Certainly individual women will not always follow the norm and that's a great thing. However, I think the norm does often explain what the majority does. But that majority isn't 90% or anything. It might be as low at 60% or lower. Hard to say. posted by volonteshiva |
