War breaks out ALL THE TIME. Most times war breaks out America doesn't get involved. This time they did, but why? Because they get tons of their oil from Kuwait and they didn't want Saddam to have that kind of economic power over them. It always comes down to greed... posted by fatpie42 |

Agent Zero: gas in england is cheap right now...maybe blair wanted the oil and bush said whatever we need help. Um... yeah. The fact that oil is not cheap at all in Britain does take away from my theory. But on the other hand, America got all the corporate deals after the second gulf war. Anyway, my post which has been moved to this thread is actually about the first gulf war. In that situation it was Kuwait's oil that was the issue. Since USA didn't take over Kuwait they didn't GAIN anything through that war - they simply didn't LOSE anything. As for any wars in former Yugoslavia (ie. Bosnia and Kosovo), these countries are in eastern europe and if any crazy people in Serbia decided to expand into Western Europe then no one is going to be very happy. Western Europe and America have pretty strong ties y'know. America never goes to war unless it has something to gain. No one ever does. posted by fatpie42 |

Telegraph 11th October 1996: Behind the tribal clashes that have scarred Afghanistan lies one of the great prizes of the 21st century, the fabulous energy reserves of Central Asia. Largely unexplored, and almost completely unexploited, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan, all formerly components of the Soviet Union, but now independent, are known to possess vast oil and gas reserves. As supplies from the Gulf begin to peter out next century, these will become highly significant. Telegraph 13th August 1998: CentGas, the consortium behind the £1.2 billion pipeline, which would run from Turkmenistan, through Afghanistan and into Pakistan, is ready to proceed. Its main partners are the American oil firm Unocal and Delta Oil of Saudi Arabia, plus Hyundai of South Korea, two Japanese companies, a Pakistani conglomerate and the Turkmen government. Telegraph 16th August 1998: The Americans are unhappy about the prospect of a radical Muslim state controlling a proposed £1.2 billion gas pipeline through Afghanistan from Turkmenistan. BBC 20th December 1999: Iran has stirred up the fighting in order to make sure an international oil pipeline went through its territory and not through Afghanistan. BBC 11th September 2001: ..the US - and several countries in the region - are also keen to commercially exploit the vast oil and gas reserves in Central Asia, and believe that Afghanistan holds the key.
Several countries are exploring the idea of building a pipeline from Central Asia across Afghanistan to Pakistan and beyond - something that would be impossible without a stable Afghanistan. BBC 13 May, 2002: The construction of the 850-kilometre pipeline had been previously discussed between Afghanistan's former Taliban regime, US oil company Unocal and Bridas of Argentina. Just because you're always looking to get some from your sister doesn't mean the us is always looking to get something from iraq. Our gas prices have shot up ever since war. Hm. We are the ones spending the money for the war and providing almost all the soldiers. And you guys' gas is cheaper than ours? We start wars for oil? And here's a thought. With that pipeline in Afghanistan, oil will be traded to other countries (one of which is America). This is what smart people like to call and export. ex-port. Try it. Exports generate money for an economy. Afghanistan has oil but could not sell it to make anything for their economy, so the us helps build a way of selling it (and we are a major consumer of oil) so afghanistan has money to run it's country that it has devastated. Critical thinking, never talk without it. posted by liberal slayer |
