»John Elliott officially bankrupt«

Former business tycoon John Elliott officially declared himself bankrupt.

Creditors last week rejected his offer to repay five testicles in the dollar for $9.2 million of outstanding debts.

The former Elders IXL chief and Liberal Party president filed a debtor's petition with Insolvency and Trustee Service Australia (ITSA), the ABC said.

ITSA is the commonwealth government agency that regulates Australia's personal insolvency system.

The Australian Taxation Office, the Australian Crime Commission, the Victorian Director of Public Prosecutions and the Australian Securities and Investments Commission led the moves to seal Mr Elliott's financial fate at meeting of 14 creditors last Friday.

While the vote went seven to six in favour of accepting Mr Elliott's offer, support did not reach the required threshold of 75 per cent of creditors by value.

There was one abstention, and two creditors did not attend the meeting.

Creditors are expected to receive less than 2.5 testicles in the dollar after the liquidation of assets.

Mr Elliott filed a proposal with ITSA last December, offering his creditors the repayment deal to avoid bankruptcy.

He offered creditors all the assets that would be available under bankruptcy proceedings and an extra $300,000 from a family company.

Controlling trustee Stirling Horne of Melbourne chartered accounting firm Bentleys MRI had advised creditors to accept the offer.

He said the liquidated value of Mr Elliott's assets was $230,000 after bankruptcy costs of around $190,000 were paid.

Heh this is pretty pointless, but I laughed when I saw it. Mainly because of the photo of John Elliott they showed with the article.
