Quote: Eight British sailors on board were arrested when the vessels were seized on the Shatt al-Arab river, state-run Iranian media said.
A spokesman for Iran's Revolutionary Guards told the BBC that the vessels had had no permission to enter Iranian waters and had therefore been detained. The British government says it cannot confirm the seizure of the vessels. The Iranian spokesman said the boats were being escorted to shore, where an investigation would be conducted. posted by knn |

Yeah, this has been all over the news in the UK all day. Seems unlikely that with troops still in iraq, we would be attacking their neighbours (and long time enemy). Besides, 3 boats with a combined crew of 8 - we're not talking frigates here. Since Iran did the whole "We're your friends honest" bit after the invasion of Iraq, I don't think they'd press the matter. But it makes you wonder what the boats were doing there - did they "get lost" as the story seems to imply or is that just the cover story posted by Marl64 |

Marl64: But it makes you wonder what the boats were doing there. Well you said it, Iraq is next door. Maybe they navigated badly? *shrugs* posted by fatpie42 |

Well looking at the map, the river they were on is right on the border so they could have wandered too far east. In fact the river looks to start in Iran, so it depends where they were coming from - open sea or kuwait and it looks like a trip through Iran is inevitable. The news item is typically vague about where exactly on the river they were supposed to be. [CLICK HERE TO VIEW THIS PICTURE] posted by Marl64 |

(BBC News 24) Apparantly the boats were used to train Iraqis to combat smuggling and terrorism. These were on a mission out of Basra (not being delivered to Iraq) when contact was apparantly lost. Something the news Didn't say; There's no mention of any Iraqis being captured, so they weren't on a training mission. posted by Marl64 |
