Geography of the UK. OK, this might seem a little like nursery at first but bear with me. I'm from a country called England. Anomaly is from a country called Scotland. These countries are next to each other and combined with a third one "Wales" form Great Britain. Great Britain and it's surrounding islands make up "The British Isles" Add Northern Ireland and you Have "The United Kingdom", central hub of "The British Commonwealth" - what's left of our empire that still borrows our Queen. It's not surprising that many foreign nationals are unaware of the differences, quite a lot of British people don't know either. So My country is England, My Nationality is British and I have to pass through British customs to enter the UK. How screwed up is this country? But what are they (beyond geographical definitions). If the UK is a nation, why is my nationality British? If Britain is a Nation, What is the UK? No Really, I don't know. posted by Marl64 |

but this is right the united kingdom looks as wales as a seperate country from England...and also takes into its fold,Northern Ireland Great Britain is England,Scotland and Northern Ireland but Wales is considered legally just an area of England and so is not represented on our flag...the Union Jack...which is a combination of the Ulster Flag...the Scottish Saltire and the English St George cross well Wales has a dragon and dragons are gay and don't deserve to be on the Union Jack... hahaha posted by the anomaly |

In my ol' geography lessons I got told that the UK was the combination of England, Scotland and Wales. Northen Ireland and the British Isles are not the U.K but they are part of the nation, "Britain". If the British Isles were part of the UK and not Britain then how would they be "British"? The offshore parts of Britain are not part of the UK because Britain used to consist of MANY countries - like India for example. I haven't seen any passport checks on the way into Wales but there you go... posted by fatpie42 |

We always remembered Great Britain as the Big Bit, the land mass that encompasses Scotland, Wales and England. Nothing to do with us being great, but a description of the largest land mass in the Kingdom of Britiania (oh yeah, there's another one). United Kingdom is of course the political boundaries which is why we get part of Ireland, but I don't know the term for this. The Welsh flag / union Jack thing has always puzzled me. Could the Welsh bit be the white Cross? Of course Britania is also the name for the woman with the helmet and the big fork - which some say looks like the shape of Britain. (only as much as the constallation of Leo looks like a Lion ) [CLICK HERE TO VIEW THIS PICTURE] posted by Marl64 |

it has apparently something to do with the fact that their is a "prince of wales" and so wales is considered a principality of England rather than a seperate country and so are not represented on the Union Flag posted by the anomaly |

Is UK considered as one nation for all political purposes? Does Scottish and Irish PM kind of report to Blair? I know as far as soccer is concerned they all represent as different countries. posted by blueSky |
