»I hate Morgan Freeman, Make Rendezvous with Rama already!«

There is a lot more to making a film than simply acquiring the rights to the book. They still need someone to finance the project, and I would guess that this will run $100 million at least. The vast majority of films do not even break even at the box office or in DVD sales (and DVD sales are 60-70% of a films revenue).

Typically, when a producer or production company is attempting to get a film produced they put together a "package" in order to lure potential investors. This package will often include concept art as well as a list of names attached to the project. You will also usually see various tidbits supporting the financial viability of the project and the potential to turn a profit.

The official film website,
looks just like this sort of package. They show some great concept artwork, list off names like Morgan Freeman and David Fincher (both bankable names who have commited to the project), they mention that the book and its author are commercially and critically acclaimed, and that there is a potential for merchandise and at least three sequels.

The last anyone has heard is that they are struggling to get financing. Freeman commented on this several years ago while promoting Dreamcatcher. He says no one understands the project and they all want to turn it into an action movie. <http://www.countingdown.com/movies/546768/news?item_id=2993132>. Morgan Freeman doesn't want this to be turned into another Hollywood "Sci-Fi" flick, but to preserve the integrity of Clarke's story, especially the sense of awe and wonder that is often missing from cinematic sf.

I'll be happy to wait for Rama to come to the screen if the film is good and faithful to the novel. There is not much point in making something that is no better than your average Michael Bay movie just so you can have it now.
