First the newer songs I have liked: Tegan and Sara - Walking with a Ghost Morrissey - First of the Gang to Die Sigur Ros - Staralfur And a few oldies: Al Stewart - Year of the Cat XTC - Senses Working Overtime Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - Do You Love Me? Pavement - Cut Your Hair And only one of these artists, Pavement, is from the United States. However for me there is one redeeming figure in US music currently: the avant garde jazz composer John Zorn...you can quibble about where the tradition of popular music ultimately started, but jazz is really an American art form, and Zorn is a master. He has literally over a hundred albums on Amazon alone, and not all of them are good, so here is a short guide to the best three Zorn albums I have heard: 1) Naked City: The violent thrash jazz masterpiece with heavy metal overtones...and lots of film noir theme covers... 2) The Gift : Instrumental surf and exotica with Asian overtones...beautiful and lush..good for driving to the beach. 3) The Big Gundown: Zorn didn't compose this album but he arranged it...it's a series of themes by Ennio Morricone from spaghetti westerns...but totally deconstructed and haunting...if you like western movies you will dig this. The ONEder Man: i was disappointed with the new album, only a couple songs even sounded like static x I wasn't thrilled with it at first, but it slowly grew on me. Still sounds like Static-X, Wayne's voice is sort of different though. posted by hungarian kid |

I just got a new John Zorn album called Bar Kokhba Sextet that is part of the series of Zorn albums called "Masada". These are named after a fortress in Palestine which served as a redoubt in the Jewish Revolt against the Roman Empire in 66 CE (AD). Bar Kokhba was a later Jewish leader who established through revolt an independent Israeli state, which he ruled from 132-135 CE. Anyway the Masada albums are a mixture of jazz, Jewish folk, surf, blues, and many other musical genres, but the main influence is Jewish folk music. Bar Kokhba Sextet is a 3-CD live set and it is really good...at some points brilliant. Zorn is the composer and conductor of the band. [CLICK HERE TO VIEW THIS PICTURE] posted by holy_of_holies |

I was just given an Ipod for my birthday and it came with $15 worth of downloads from Itunes. I downloaded some songs by the Darkness that weren't on their album, but my favorite download so far was "Downtown Train" by Tom Waits. You all might know it from the Rod Stewart Outside another yellow moon
Has punched a hole in the nighttime, yes I climb through the window and down to the street I'm shining like a new dime The downtown trains are full with all of those Brooklyn girls They try so hard to break out of their little worlds Well you wave your hand and they scatter like crows They have nothing that will ever capture your heart They're just thorns without the rose Be careful of them in the dark Oh, if I was the one you chose to be your only one Oh baby can't you hear me now, can't you hear me now Will I see you tonight on a downtown train Every night it's just the same, you leave me lonely now posted by holy_of_holies |
