The goth metal band Children Of Bodom ♣ have done two rather cool covers which I heard recently. One was a version of Billy Idol's "Rebel Yell" which is damn cool. The more interesting however is a version of Europe's corny as hell "The Final Countdown". Throughout the song the lyrics are screamed in gothy style and most of the time you can't make out the words but there is no mistaking the chorus: "IT'S THE FINAL COUNTDOWWWWWN!" posted by fatpie42 |

I like two songs that I bet most of you hate: #1 "Movin' Out (Anthony's Song)" by Billy Joel! "Anthony works in the grocery store Savin' his pennies for someday Mama Leone left a note on the door, She said, 'Sonny, move out to the country.' Workin' too hard can give you A heart attack -ack -ack -ack -ack -ack You oughta know by now Who needs a house out in Hackensack? Is that what you get with your money? It seems such a waste of time If that's what it's all about If that's movin' up then I'm movin' out." Awesome lyrics, great performance and music. Also: #2 "You Don't Know How It Feels" by Florida's own Tom Petty! "Let me run with you tonight I’ll take you on a moonlight ride There’s someone I used to see But she don’t give a damn for me But let me get to the point, let’s roll another joint And turn the radio loud, I’m too alone to be proud You don’t know how it feels You don’t know how it feels to be me-e-e-e." Both of them are great American songwriters, and neither of them were ever "cool." Coolness is the death of great music. As soon as it starts to be cool, it starts to suck. Punk was awesome until it became cool in the nineties, and now people think Green Day is punk. That's what happens when coolness kills music. Blues was great until the sixties, when it became cool, and now people think rich white guys who work in music stores can be blues musicians just because they can run up and down a blues scale a few times on their expensive musical equipment. It's only possible to be a talented songwriter/performer if you are uncool. People think the Beatles were cool when they were making records, but think again. In the sixties it was cool to be an aimless drifter, not a driven professional like Lennon and McCartney. When Bob Marley died, hardly anyone noticed, and now every fratboy in the world has that greatest hits CD on the stereo when he mixes his shitty margaritas. Everyone wondered why Bob Dylan wasn't involved in any anti-war activities, but I can tell you why. He wanted to be uncool. The cool people in the sixties were all radical activists, like Timothy Leary ♣ or Abbie Hoffman ♣, but they are barely remembered now. Mark my words, the rock stars of the future will be total losers by whatever standard happens to be in place during their careers. P Diddy will be forgotten twenty years from now, but Tom Petty will be remembered. Because he was uncool. posted by Too Uncool for IMO |

holy_of_holies: "Downtown Train" by Tom Waits. You all might know it from the Rod Stewart version that was a hit I didn't know the Rod Stewart version existed, I'm a Waits fan so meh. For covers I recommend Primus covers of Pink Floyd songs. Or the Colonel Claypools Fearless Flying Frog Brigade (same bassist/singer as Primus) live album cover of Pink Floyd's 'Animals'. I actually prefer the Les Claypool covers to the Pink Floyd originals. posted by hungarian kid |

One song I would also recommend is a version of the traditional Irish song "The Foggy Dew," sung by Sinead O'Connor with backing music by the Chieftains. I always thought Sinead had an awesome voice, but this track is so hauntingly beautiful that it must be heard to be believed. posted by Eire go Brach |

I wanted to start a topic about this band but never got around to it before I was banned. Ween is two guys who make albums that I listen to sometimes; they were at their best and funniest in the nineties when they put out the albums Pure Guava and Chocolate and Cheese . I saw them live in my town about that time. They like to use effects on their vocals to make them sound weird, but they can actually write very good songs in a bizarre kind of way. These are some good songs to check out by Ween: Chocolate and Cheese : "Voodoo Lady" "Roses are Free" (this is a Christmas-type song with strange effects; I remember figuring out the chords on guitar when it first came out) "Spinal Meningitis (Got Me Down)" "Baby Bitch" Pure Guava : "The Stallion, Pt. 3" "Push th' Little Daisies" (this one actually had a video that I remember seeing on MTV) The Pod (LOL, only for the brave! "Pork Roll Egg and Cheese" Anyway, give them a listen, Guest, and check them out live when they come to your town. For sheer creativity it doesn't get any better than Ween. posted by Poop Ship Destroyer |

Another good Billy Joel song is "Allentown." It's a working-class anthem and may be his best song ever; it's like white Yankee soul music or something. posted by Davy Still in the Navy |

Thanks to Kupov's blog, I now like the Nine Inch Nails song "Hurt." Also, thanks to HK reminding me of Mr. Bungle, I got the third Mr. Bungle album ( California ) and it is amazing, like a death metal version of the Beach Boys. Not to be missed. I also got the Naked City box set for Christmas. It has remastered versions of every note the band ever recorded, and everything sounds awesome. In case you have not heard of them, Naked City were a New York City band from the late 80's and early 90's that mixed hardcore and metal with jazz and experimental music. John Zorn (who produced the first Mr. Bungle album) composed or arranged all of Naked City's songs. If you can only download one song by them, try the instrumental "Batman;" it is an original Zorn piece and has never been featured in any Batman movie or TV show. This was the first song I ever heard by Naked City and is the first song on their first album. I remember figuring out the guitar part when I first got the album and being pleased to no end. Check it out, it rocks. Anyway, Happy Holidays, IMO. posted by MindSlavery Florida |

Kupov: Download the Johnny Cash cover if that's not the one you allready mean its much better. The Cash version was what I heard first on your blog but then I bought The Downward Spiral and heard the original. I like the original NIN version better because the guitar is more interesting and I like the way Reznor almost whispers the lyrics in some parts. In general, "Hurt" reminds me of the Velvet Underground's "Heroin" because of the way both songs start out quietly and then get loud. posted by MindSlavery Florida |

Goodbye Sober Day was the first Bungle song I heard, and it remains one of my favourites. I absolutely loved how much diversity of styles there was just in that one song, and it flowed so brilliantly. Lately I've been getting some more Joe Satriani albums and a rare arse album - 'A Fine Pink Mist' by Jake E. Lee. The Jake E. Lee is an instrumental, really funking good... and pretty rare. Joe Satriani's self-titled album is great, so really awesome blues tracks on it. And Strange Beautiful music has 2 brilliant 7 string songs on it, the track 'Seven String' is just awesome. Also check out 'Sleep Walk' off Strange Beautiful Music. Great instrumental music. And for some nice light European-styled dark music with a lot of acoustic, Opeth's album 'Damnation' is brilliant. Not the Opeth album to get if you want heavy, but it works awesomely, still dark and it just works brilliantly. posted by hungarian kid |

It's his band with the guitarist/singer for the Melvins, bass player from Mr. Bungle, and drummer for Slayer. I bought their most recent album "Suspended Animation" on Itunes, and it's really great. It sounds like some kind of twisted cartoon music. That's what's unique about Patton's bands, the way they put together music that seems sort of goofy and happy with music that is very dark and disturbed. And just like, when you mix black paint with white paint, it still comes out looking dark, Patton's bands always sound dark, even when they are playing lighthearted cartoony music. Another good Patton band is Tomahawk, his band with the guitarist from the Jesus Lizard, but I like Fantomas better. posted by MindSlavery Florida |
