the anomaly: your a bit thick aren't you?
its called "English" for the wholly unsurprising reason that the language originated in England...which is in Britain...which is in Europe... so stop raping the language So the Greeks invented the Straw that we use today to drink things when they used a real piece of straw to drink stuff. That's why it's called a straw, but it took the US to make the thing something people could use without getting splinters and catching disease. As a courtesy, we decided to not rename the straw, because it would just confuse the Greeks. so... On a similar note, after 1776, we had this language, and we were all like, "Man, those British can't do anything right", so we changed it around a bunch to make it better, but so as to not confuse anyone from the UK, we kept the name English, instead of just changing it to Americanese or something... posted by GuyFromOH |

Come on, we Australians havn't changed it at all, and we were all convicts. You'd think English would've been raped harder by convicts than by pilgrims... Then again... it wasn't JUST convicts... british english is spoken mostly around the world. though i live in los angeles, i was originally born in malaysia (around indonesian and phillipines area) and we spoke british english because we were under british rule. and i think america is dumb. the language change is alright (took awhile to get ued to it), but if you really want to complain, complain about the dumb measuring system: feet, inches, miles, WTH? posted by sangu |

sangu: complain about the dumb measuring system: feet, inches, miles, WTH? You realise that this is ALSO a legacy from British rule? Many of our measurements in Britain have changed to metric now, but we still use miles. Miles are cool. Not to mention pints... nothing like a good pint posted by fatpie42 |

At least you've always had a metric money system. We used to shillings and ha'pennys in Britain. Goodness knows who much money the British managed to make by having a completely incomprehensible monetary system! That's one form of imperial units America has never had to worry about! posted by fatpie42 |

sangu: knn: Not got smart. Well, one of the Mars probes crashed because 1 scientist used the english system in his calculations and another used the metric system in his calculation... Other than just being asshole, the US can retain it's system of weights and measures because it is big enough and self-contained/sufficient enough to not care... Now if the US was the size of France or whatnot, then I am pretty sure we would be on the global standard... posted by volonteshiva |

why did it go horrible? people not used to it i guess...weird. Everything you buy at the grocery store is labeled in the English and SI units, there are some road signs that have km on them, every spedometer has both Km and Miles on it, but that may be to drive to Canada. I can get used to metric measurments at the store, but I just can't get a feel for Celsius vs Fahrenheit, I know what it's going to feel like with the weatherman says 72 degrees F, but if he says something like 23C, I have no idea what to expect. posted by GuyFromOH |
