Quote: Former President Bill Clinton is taking the proverbial "I told you so" stance with regards to terror chief Osama bin Laden.
Speaking at a luncheon sponsored by the History Channel yesterday, Clinton said he warned incoming President George W. Bush before he left office in 2001 that the founder of al-Qaida was the biggest security threat the United States faced. "In his campaign, Bush had said he thought the biggest security issue was Iraq and a national missile defense," Clinton said, according to Reuters. "I told him that in my opinion, the biggest security problem was Osama bin Laden." Clinton told the audience his inability to convince Bush of the danger posed by al-Qaida represented "one of the two or three of the biggest disappointments that I had." posted by knn |

Quote: "In his campaign, Bush had said he thought the biggest security issue was Iraq and a national missile defense," Clinton said, according to Reuters. "I told him that in my opinion, the biggest security problem was Osama bin Laden." On Clinton's list Iraq was the sixth, and Bin Laden the first. Wonder who stood in between... However, what I want to say is that I don't think saying afterwards that "remember I told you/I warned you/you should have listened to me" is of much help or is fair. It usually just pisses people off. Much better would be to say what to do now - some real help at least. Another proof that probably Bush could have done much better if he listened more to people, but who needs that. Any way. I presonally disapprove of people who say all the time "I told you". posted by mymla |

Jeez, The cheek of Clinton "Hey I warned Bush and he did nothing" I'd expect that kind of shit from a presidential advisor who himself never had his finger on the button, but an Ex Pres I'm not a Bush fan, but Clinton has no right to stick the boot in - Telling a successor how to solve a problem after you didn't - Phah! It's like a baseball player, getting caught and then telling the next man to the plate - "oh and try not to get caught". posted by Marl64 |

The authorities let the terrorists into the country and intended to watch what they did once they got in. They did such a bad job that the terrorists were able to learn how to fly a plane and then hi-jack several airliners. If they'd seen Al Quiaeda as more of a threat 9/11 would never have happened. It's not like Clinton would have done any favours by (a) talking about where the biggest threats to the US were when Bush had initially come in (that would breach national security) (b) blaming Bush for not paying more attention while the country was in mourning straight after 9/11. However, now that it has been over a year since the event, it seems much fairer for him to say his piece. posted by fatpie42 |

but Clinton has tried to do this as long as he has been out of office. First he tried to say "i told you so" with the economy that HE was responsible for (it was in a recession before bush's economic plan even came into effect). We have had a long standing common courtesy among presidents that after your term is up, you stay out of the national spotlight criticising your successor. Every president has done this except Clinton. He won't shut up and it's really getting old. Clinton did shit and it is not fair for him to say his piece because he did nothing. We are caught in quite a predicament here. If the government were to go after who they thought were terrorists or even closely watch them, it would be labeled racist by our screwed up country. even without that, if i told Knn that i was going to kill him, and then actually found and killed him, could i blame him for not taking precautions? NO. It would be my fault not his, but everyone wants to blame the guy that "did nothing" posted by liberal slayer |

he thought al qaida was a bigger threat than iraq... what he also said was "i supported a policy of regime change from 1998 after the weapons inspectors WERE THROWN OUT OF IRAQ" he also said "i may have invaded iraq but only after the weapons inspectors were finished doing their job" he also said that he supported the invasion of iraq and the fact that Bush asked the senate for permission to use force if Saddam did not comply with the resolutions posted by the anomaly |
