What are everyone's thoughts, guesses and feelings about dreams? Are they subliminal messages from some place else? Are they incoherent thoughts your brain uses to sort everything out it processed the day before? I'd like to hear some more theories from everyone concerning what they believe dreams are and/or mean and maybe why we dream in the first place. posted by The ONEder Man |

well, its a hypothesis, but i think dreams are where your brain takes information from you and plays it out. it takes your heart's secrets/desire, your memories, and like...puts on a nice little movie in your head. but sometimes where it gets its stuff, i have no clue. random things often pop into my head. maybe its tappin into my imagination. The ONEder Man: Are they incoherent thoughts your brain uses to sort everything out it processed the day before? kind of like that, but not just the day before, maybe a week before or month... posted by sangu |

are visual representations of our feelings, at least in my case. If there's anyone especially interested in dreams, you could email me at quende_aranel@cox.net or IM me at Red Tendrils. I have vivid, colorful, fantastical, adventurous dreams to compete with Lord of the Rings. (Okay, so maybe not that good. Whatever.) Anyways, when I feel trapped, I might be chased or captured in a dream. When I feel violated.. well. A more literal sort of violation may occur in a dream. There are lots of feelings that could contribute to my dreams. I know that other people's dreams are controlled more by their thoughts, however. For example, dreaming of things going on during the day, etc.. whatever was going on in their mind before bedtime. I think this might have to do with you personality type. If you've ever taken the Myers-Briggs test, you'll know what I mean when I say I'm an INFP. (If you don't know about this test, go to keirsey.com. The different types are explained at the bottom.) INFPs are very feeling people. So maybe people that have strong feelings will have dreams dominated by their feelings. This person I was talking about, however, whose dreams are basically only about whatever they were thinking about when they went to bed, is an ESTJ, and extremely concrete thinking person. So, as a result, her dreams are dominated by factual things that happenened/are happening/etc. So it could be different from person to person. posted by Nianza |

I believe dreams are a way for your subconscious to process your conscious mind and your memories. I have seen a number of programs on this issue, but of course when I need to recall that information in detail right now, I come up fairly blank. Thus if you bury a painful memory it will often manifest in your dreams. Same goes for pleasant or pleasurable memories. Of course it differs from person to person since people are generally wired differently... One of the coolest ways to influence your dreams is lucid dreaming. The method where during a dream, you are able to realize you are dreaming and thus take control. i.e. You can fly, have powers, etc whatever you can imagine. I've come close but never fully. It is fucking sweet though... posted by volonteshiva |

Dreams are to alot of people a way of escape, others beleive they represent something we are trying to tell ourselves, then the really crazy people believe that dreams tell the future. I think dreams are events of the day our minds are tryign to sort through it just kinda goes random, cause alot of times we dream what we were talkign or thinking about that day. Like my friend is going to the NCAA swimming natiionals and we have been talkign alot about it and last night i dreamt i went to it to swim, when i cant swim very good at all. Dreams are a way of our minds to sort things out i think. posted by Agent Zero |

I once read somewhere that you don't remember your dreams UNLESS you have a lack of vitamins (Vitamine B) or if you are under stress. There is another possibility: If you train to remember them. posted by knn |

interesting topic, I don't know about anyone else but I always know when I'm dreaming I can't change the course of the dream but I always feel in control at all times sangu: random things often pop into my head. maybe its tappin into my imagination. I mainly dream of a mixture of things either from the past or present and things which you've seen or done get muddled in, but also things totally new can appear so that's got to be down to your imagination. posted by zesja |

zesja: things totally new can appear so that's got to be down to your imagination. My dreams are a mixture of all that. Things that are going on, things that I think are going to happen, my feelings and my imagination, mainly things in my subconscious. I've been a bit weirded out before when I've dreamt of having a conversation with someone then having the exact same situation with them in real life, you get an insane sense of De Ja Vu. I don't know what to think, I doubt it's any form of foresight, just something that gets put into your subconscious and then you act on it without realising and the person reacts the exact way you dreamt because they might be predictable or someone you know really well. Either that or foresight, I'd like to believe in the foresight but I know the latter is probably the truer one. posted by hungarian kid |

There is another possibility: If you train to remember them. Hmm, that's weird! Sounds possible though. I have been under major stress lately and have had some of the most vivid and memorable dreams ever. Often I dwell on a particularly strong dream for the rest of the following day. I never thought I'd trade my dreams for anything.. until now. I've heard that Vitamin B is a stress reliever.. so this all makes a lot of sense. Maybe I should start taking Vitamin B. But no dreams? It's a toughie I tell ya! posted by Nianza |

I've been wondering for a while about this. Remember when I told you guys that I had these weird dreams that involved a lot of...blood...and gore and stuff? At the time, I was pretty scared...because a discussion about dreams came up in church. And in the Bible there are certain important figures that accurately predict the future because of their dreams. I was trying to figure out what my dreams symbolized. But nothing particularly horrible was happening then, I wasn't very stressed out...it was very odd indeed. I didn't want to think if it could even remotely resemble the future. That's all gone now. Sometimes I still think of these...unsettling things at random times (unintentionally, of course), but very rarely. I don't seem to have anymore dreams...or don't seem to remember them at all. Maybe I've been eating more veggies. :edit: On another note, why is this thread in 'religious topics'? I can see how it might relate to religion, as I have mentioned above in this post, but no one has brought up religion until now (me). posted by nocturnal_anonymous |

I have bloody dreams too but I still don't think I'd give them up. They're too thrilling. It's like watching violent movies. Except a bit scarier because you're in it. I like my dreams, even if they're violent for the most part. Why? I dunno. I mean, imagine a great movie - a violent, emotionally turbulent, drama. It might be sad and heartwrenching while watching it, but you come out with a good, bittersweet feeling, like what you've seen was worthwhile. posted by Nianza |

True, I don't call dreams like that nightmares unless they actually wake me up to the extent where I still think I'm in the dream. I enjoy dreams, although sometimes mine can be pretty boring, but the awesome ones make sleeping more worth it. posted by hungarian kid |
