Once again, Ohio just turned down a bill to stop requiring a front license plate to be required. Not requiring a front plate would save millions for the state over a few years. The only argument I have heard for the front plate is that police like it so that they have a better chance of catching the license plate number of hit-and-run drivers. But how much does having the front plate really help? Is it worth the added state govt cost? How do those in Europe and elsewhere feel about this? Many cars just look better w/o a front license plate. Aesthetics seems to be one of the biggest issues against other than the cost. There are some politics involved here, but the exact placement of this topic may need to be changed... posted by volonteshiva |

i have thought long about this as they are required here and they make cars look ugly. the only conclusions i can come up with as to why they would want them is: 1. if the law is looking for a certain car and they meet it in oncoming traffic. 2. those damn video cameras at stop lights. 3. if you don't have one it can be used as an excuse to pull you over if they suspect anything. 4. if the police want to be real strict about it they can ticket you for it and that means $ that you have to pay, money that goes towards...well, whatever it is that it goes towards. 5. if you have one damaged or unreadable you have to replace not one, but BOTH, because they "cannot re-make a certain number" (even though they can custom make vanity plates 6. they do cost money to make, but i can promise you that they make a profit off of the sale of them. i took mine off of my new car because it looked dumb and the car looks 100% better without it, and i see a few people around here that either have novelty front plates or none at all (even though "just becase everyone else is doing it" is not an excuse). i have mine in my trunk just incase i get pulled over and asked about it, i have heard and read to say something like, oh it fell off, or the bracket holding it on was bumped and bent and i haven't replaced it yet, or, i just came from a car show. a friend of mine had a pontiac formula ♣ and went without his plate and got pulled over once. he had been speeding around all day and im sure they were on the lookout for him, even though they couldnt catch him in the act they did pull him over for missing his front plate. he explained that the car was new and he did not know how to remove the plastic cover on the front bumper to put the plate on, but it was in the car to prove he had it, they didn't ticket him or anything...just told him to take it slowly in that car. they didn't even mention anything like "be sure to put that license plate on there." its funny though, i installed a mesh grill to protect the radiator of my car (there is nothing in the air dam on a miata to protect it at all) and i just left the plate off when i was done. my friends saw it and mentioned that they liked how it looks with the grill and all that, then i asked them if they noticed anything else different about my car. not one single person noticed that the palte was missing. my theory is: because there is no "place" to put one on my car. a lot of cars have areas on the front bumper to put a license plate, there are no holes or indentions on my front bumper for a plate, so without one, it looks normal...like nothing is missing or out of place. i don't like them at all and want to move to another state that doesnt require them. i know louisiana doesnt require front plates, but that state smells bad...i don't want to live there. posted by allone |

the reason for from plates in the UK will be more apparent when the new model gatso ♣ camera is installed throughout the country at the moment the speed cameras are designed to face cars as the drive away from it...many drivers were getting flashed and so to counter the cameras you were able to buy a special see through, spray on laquer that would reflect the flash and cover the number plate the new forward facing cameras are supposed to be more of a deterent than to actually catch motorists because they will be more visible pretty good idea until you consider that they only read front number plates and you realise that motorcycles don't have front number plates...so they can go as fast as they like and even if they get flashed by the cameras they wont get caught cause they wont have a forward facing plate posted by the anomaly |

i just remembered this thread! i brought this thread back is because...i got in an email a link to this: ARTICLE 9. REDUCTION IN NUMBER OF LICENSE PLATES ISSUED
SECTION 9.01. Subchapter A, Chapter 502, Transportation Code, is amended by adding Section 502.010 to read as follows: Sec. 502.010. ISSUANCE AND DISPLAY OF LICENSE PLATE. (a) Notwithstanding anything in this code to the contrary, including Section 502.180, the department shall issue only one license plate for attachment at the rear of the vehicle for which the plate is issued. (b) Notwithstanding anything in this code to the contrary, including Section 502.404(a), a person is entitled to operate on a public highway a vehicle that displays only one license plate if the plate is attached at the rear of the vehicle. A person may operate on a public highway a vehicle that displays two license plates if both plates were assigned by the department for the registration period as a set of plates. (c) In any provision of this code that relates to the issuance or display of "license plates," "plates," or a "set of plates," the term means only one license plate. SECTION 9.02. The change in law made by this article regarding the issuance of license plates by the Texas Department of Transportation applies only to the issuance of license plates by the department for a registration period beginning on or after the effective date of this article. For a registration period that begins before the effective date of this article, the department shall issue license plates as required by the law in effect immediately before the effective date of this article, and the former law is continued in effect for that purpose. SECTION 9.03. This article takes effect November 1, 2005. so, it looks like texas wont require front plates after nov. 1 this year. um, or atleast i think... posted by allone |

nice. Ohio actually rejected this again in the state congress. Just seems lame. Police say they like the front plate for getting hit and runners. But if you have time to read the front license plate of car or to take pics of it, then you can just as easily take the pic/read the numbers when it goes by you! posted by volonteshiva |

My car came with a front license plate bracket, even though my state doesn't require front license plates. So natrually, I put an Ohio State University license plate on the front of my car. posted by Tiefling |
