Ok this is a hot button topic. what do all of you think about it? for me personally i wouldnt want to live 15 years like that. kill me unless i can recover. For those who don't know...terri sufforeda heart attack 15 years ago and suffored brain damage and has been kept alive by a feeding tube and machines. she cant move or anything. The debate goign on was between the husband and the parents. the parents wanted them to leave the tube in to keep feeding her but the husband wanted her to finally STOP SUFFERING AND DIE ALREADY. ok so my question to you is would you like to be kept alive for 15 years like that. brain damaged and out of it? i wouldnt... posted by Agent Zero |

Agent Zero: ok so my question to you is would you like to be kept alive for 15 years like that. brain damaged and out of it? i wouldnt... Did you write that down somewhere and have it in your pocket? I saw a case where a woman was in the same case (at least it looked in the TV like that) and suddenly woke up after 3 years and is married now and has children. posted by knn |

According to Dr. Cranford, Schiavo's upper brain was about 80 percent destroyed, and there was also damage to the lower brain. There's no waking up from that. Left - a normal brain. Right - Terri Schiavo's brain. [CLICK HERE TO VIEW THIS PICTURE] posted by Tiefling |

...well, at least to a certain point, because Terri Schiavo's case suddenly had everyone paying attention to her and not his trial. On another note, I would like to comment that now everyone's gonna cash in on Terri. I can already see a book and movie coming soon and millions for the husband and family. If they can get that sorted without going to court again. posted by Echelon |

I think the test is: If left without artificial life support, would the person die? Would they have died 50 years ago in the same circumstances.? Keeping her alive was artificial. Removing the artificial aids is just letting nature take its course. She didn't have sufficient brain function to have personality or self awareness, so she's already dead, whats left is like the PC after you've removed the BIOS chip. It looks like a PC and smells like a PC, but it ain't a PC. posted by guest |

knn: I saw a case where a woman was in the same case (at least it looked in the TV like that) and suddenly woke up after 3 years and is married now and has children. also the doctors underestimated her power to feel, so they performed food tube surgery on her without anesthetics. she was actually going through the surgery, feeling every bit of pain. she talked about how she knew and felt everything that was going on around her, but could not respond back. i think that was what made me not want to kill schiavo. the thing is, how many percent of her brain was dead/screwed up? if the doctors can mess up on determining her ability to feel, maybe they were slightly off in determining schiavo's health state. posted by sangu |

This happened in my home state and I was disgusted by the whole thing. But this paranoia about doctors...it's ridiculous. You want to be paranoid about somebody, be paranoid about faceless wackos like me on the Internet. Don't be paranoid about doctors. What, do you think they want to get sued for malpractice? posted by holy_of_holies |
