»Bush to Want Everyone Screened for Mental Illness«

In July, Bush is to announce an initiative which would recommend that everyone from preschool on up be screened for mental illness. The plan also promotes the use of antipsychotic and antidepressant drugs.

The British Medical Journal says the initiative is to have "services in the community, rather than institutions." The report says "Each year, young children are expelled from preschools and childcare facilities for severely disruptive behaviors."

Critics say that Bush's initiative is to promote the pharmaceutical industry by "fishing for customers." Under Bush's proposal, more private insurers would have to pay for psychotropic drugs. Others say early intervention can change aggressive kids.
