What the hell Knn? Stairway to Heaven isn't a cover song, Robert Plant wrote the lyrics and Jimmy Page wrote the riff. They wrote it in Bron-Y-Aur. It's just been covered a fuckload of times by other bands and artists. It's been covered by Dixie Power Trio, Leningrad Cowboys, Great White, Rolf Harris, Jimi Hendrix, Toys Went Berserk, Foo Fighters, The Australian Doors SHow, Jana, Ludwig Von 88, Me First and the Gimme Gimmes, Jonh Paul Young, Pardon Me Boys, Stanley Jordan, Pat Boone, Dolly Parton, Frank Zappa, Far Corporation, Dave Matthews Band, Dread Zeppelin, Just Hayward and probably more.

Now the Beatles... I'm not a huge fan, but they did create a broad range of music. The Stones kept to a sort of country basis where as the Beatles had alittle more diversity, which is what made Zeppelin good too. But the Beatles were good writers. I think they're overated for their talent and music, but they still did do alot that's worthy of praise. Do you think music today would be the same if the Beatles never existed? There's so many bands, it's hard to determine such things. It wasn't just the Beatles that created a broad range of music though, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, David Bowie, the Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd and even Elvis have all helped in that. I think The Beatles was just the most noticeable because of the time.

Unplugged is good, but I'm still sick of Nirvana, too sick of it to listen to it.

Thanks. I didn't claim that it was covered. I asked whether it was. But thank for the mentioning of Dolly Parton, I will try to get that version Thumb Up

Give Them Some Credit

To understand the whole Nirvana phenomenon, you have to have been a teenager in the nineties. For many people, it was their first taste of what was really going on in the underground scene, and it sounded amazing. Of course now it doesn't sound that great, just like hardly anybody listens to Elvis albums anymore; you had to be young at the time to really feel that music. I was just starting high school, and I bought the Nevermind cassette right after it came out because I heard "Smells Like Teen Spirit" on college radio and thought it was cool.

Then the video for "Smells Like Teen Spirit" came out and that was the best part, all the kids moshing in the gym and the cheerleaders with anarchy symbols on their uniforms. Of course, when Nirvana came to my town a few years later, I went to see them and they were not very good. (I also got thrown out by bouncers halfway through, but that's another story.) But I have heard live recordings of a lot of the original punk bands like the Sex Pistols and such, and they sucked live too.

I was the first person I knew that had Nevermind , and it was the first "heavy" album I ever bought. All my previous tapes were stuff like REM, the Smiths, Depeche Mode, the Cure, etc., which was better than most: some people I knew went straight from Vanilla Ice and MC Hammer to Nirvana, which was what Cobain hated. He hated that he had become a fashion statement for the kind of people that used to mistreat him as a kid. LOL, I guarantee you, if you know many people my age as I write this (29), some of them listened to Vanilla Ice and then became "alternative" when Nirvana got popular. What a joke, now that Nirvana isn't cool anymore, those people probably listen to Eminem or some shit like that, which is just the new Vanilla Ice as far as I am concerned, only this time there is no Cobain to save us from the corporate crap. Just the horrible zombie factory that is American Idol, where each year's biggest pop star is elected by a telephone poll.

So I don't discredit Nirvana for what they did for music, but when I listen to so-called "alternative radio" fifteen years after Nirvana broke, and all the bands are still trying to sound like Nirvana, I find it ridiculous. Some of these new bands are a whole generation older than the members of Nirvana, and the sound hasn't changed at all, just soft verse, hit the distortion pedal, loud chorus, screaming lyrics, etc. The only antidote to commercial radio and its Nirvana-wannabe's is for new bands to write and perform better than Nirvana ever were and make the music they want to, not worrying about commercial success. Also, local bands should stop acting like they are going to be Cobain-type stars and just be a part of the scene. Bands trying to pull off now what Nirvana did in the nineties is an exercise in futility. Give it up dude.

What i liked about Nirvana wasn't just the music & the lyrics, but also the image. Back in their hey-days, every teenager wanted to copy their look, thus you looked cool if you looked liked them: messy hair & clothes. Which meant you'd also be a popular kid & go on a lot of dates even if you weren't hot, or/and you couldn't afford to buy new, fashionable clothes.

See: i was a guns n'roses fan too, but let's face it: i didn't look as gorgeous as the girls in their videos...like, i don't know...for example...supermodel: (watch out: nudity) Stephanie Seymour

Today, we girls, again have to look perfect, like Britney Spears and Mariah Carey , which isn't very cheap to accomplish if you're not a natural born beauty I don't know what to do

The thing about nirvana is that their songs are good, you can listen to them and have a good time, but it's not something to worship !

And every person has his taste in metal, there are a lot of kinds of metal, for example, i like opera metal, symphonic metal, sush as nightwish, rhapsody of fire, manowar, blind guardian, stratovarius ... and NIRVANA is just not my STYLE, but i can't say that they suck !

In fact, when i was first introduced to metal, i listend to nirvana and metallica, then i started listening to some maiden, and then i ended up with symphonic metal ! and who knows maybe i'll end up listening to hip hop ! nah cuz this shit really sucks yuck

Lol lots of metalheads listen to Hiphop, you wouldn't believe it. Maybe you just havn't found the right stuff yet. Some even listen to country, it's best not to discredit a style because of what you hear on the radio. That's usually pop versions of the styles anyway.

I always wonder though, how did Nirvana get more hype than the other grunge bands? Alice In Chains is by far sooo much better, in every sense. I never heard them get airplay in the 90's, so what the hell? Was Nirvana just the most marketable or something?
