»Please tell me what is so special about Nirvana?«

Most everyone seems to joy-gasm over Nirvana but I don't see what is so great about them. Please put forth your reasoning for liking them so I can understand this phenomenon.

And I know I'm going to hear "they ushered in a new age of rock" blah blah blah

all I see them ushering in is a new age of shit rock that has been going on way to long now

depreso-rock that may make you wanna put a shotgun in your mouth apparently

Argh I'm sick of people saying "Smells Like Teen Spirit" is the anthem of teen rebellion. I don't hear an ounce of teen rebellion in it, I just hear a raspy voice and a simple catchy riff that seems to have sparked a huge wave of "fans."

You'll find that most these "fans" only have the album Nevermind. Which ofcourse has Smells Like Teen Spirit and Come As You Are, people just worship that stuff. I'm not a Nirvana fan, but I have all the albums and I don't see what's so special. I mean, he had an alright singing voice, and he could write catchy riffs... but come on. He was no David Bowie (although he tried to be.) I'm a David Bowie fan, and it really shits me when people think Kurt Cobain wrote The Man Who Destroyed the World.

And then you have the bloody conspiricists that say "he didn't kill himself, someone else pulled the trigger." Gah, that's not gonna make him come back, keep it to yourselves just like the 2Pac conspiricists who say 2Pac's not dead.

But really, Nirvana are extremely overrated, they didn't really seem to spawn that many bands after them. I mean they were grunge, but I havn't seen many grunge bands since the days of Nirvana. Infact Heavy Metal quickly took over.
Kurt Cobain could write, but all Nirvana is, is half-arsed singing and half-arsed playing.

Heh in a simpler way, I don't get the hype either ONEder.

nirvana still rules

Nevermind is my favorite album but yeah smells like teen spirit is good but doesnt really have any meaning.

I think Nirvana is better then Bowie but i don't really like bowie too much so its pretty one sided.

I have all the other Nirvana albums too except from the muddy banks of (some place) and greatest hits. And they are all very good definitly my favorite band

What is so special about Madonna? These were icons of the 80ies and beginning 90ies where heros still could be made...

Even Mike Tyson is not that good, only his opponents were weak.

Can you tell me what's so special about Michael Jackson's Billie Jean video clip? I can't. But when I saw it for the first time I was "Wooow!".

Thank you for starting this thread. Thumb Up

For years, I have pondered this question and have been frustrated in my search for a definitive answer. I've listened to the albums, watched videos/documentaries, read stories about them...to no avail. I just don't get why people think they are this groundbreaking, earth-changing band. Set your George Michael free

You should see the looks that I get when I say the best drumming Dave Grohl ever did was w/Queens of the Stone Age  on "Songs for the Deaf."

Have any of you listened to the MTV Unplugged performance by Nirvana? Arguably one of their best performances, and it was one of their last performances.

Showed they had some versatility and could do acoustic pretty well.

Yeah, I have the CD...and it is a VERY good disc, but I think you're misinterpreting my comments. I'm not saying I don't like them or think that they weren't an excellent band...I'm saying I don't think they were a GREAT band. A band on the level of The Beatles, the Stones, etc...which is what many believe them to be.

I understand what you are saying... beatles, stones... Have you listened to some of their albums all the way through? How many good songs on them? Album as a whole? I recently listened to a number of Beatles albums from the 60s when they were alot more mellow and I really wasn't that impressed...

I like Nirvana and I am not ready to put them up there with the "greatest" bands, however you have to admit that they did define a genre/period in time. i.e. Grunge, and early 90s, death of hair metal.

Nah, I can't agree w/this...Rubber Soul, Revolver, White Album, Abbey Road, Sgt. Pepper's...all albums that I thought were fantastic. Whereas Nirvana's Unplugged album is the only one that I REALLY liked. I mean, yeah, I liked Nevermind...but I thought it was a good album, not great.

Yeah, I agree that they signified the death of hair metal (thank God)...however, I won't agree that if not for Nirvana, this wouldn't have happened. Personally, I think if Pearl Jam would have released "Evenflow" before "Smells like Teen Spirit," we'd be looking at them as the patron saints of Grunge...hmm...I guess now that I think about it, I still think of Pearl Jam when I hear the word "grunge." Set your George Michael free

Oh, BTW, here's everybody's random trivia fact for the day...

The "most influential" album to the grunge scene wasn't even recorded in Seattle...It was recorded right here in Madison, Wisconsin. The album was produced by Butch Vig, founder of Garbage and Madison resident, who has a studio right on campus. Thumb Up

What did you find so fantastic about Abbey Road for example?

Perhaps, the copies I have aren't the best recorded/remastered, but I just wasn't moved by it. Their voices were very high, little bass, slow music. I haven't really studied the lyrics yet. I accept they could write great pop songs, but pop songs don't make a person a great lyricist. I know that Lenon can write some deep songs... i.e. Imagine. Perhaps if I heard this cd again w/ better remastering and bass I could get into it more.

It just seems like they are really into their transcendental medition period, very laid back, very high. Nothing wrong w/ that but often it seems you need to be likewise high to really appreciate it. I mean, really, you have to be high as shit to truly get into a 10 minute jefferson airplane guitar stint, right?

Yeah, but they basically INVENTED pop music. Before was only Jazz, Rock'n'Roll and Classic. Oh, and Country. Now imagine living in such a world (only country, jazz, rock and classic)... and then come the Beatles. I guess you would like them, too Thumb Up

Moreover (think about Marilyn Monroe, James Dean, Grace Kelly, Princess Di and Elvis) the Beatles died/split pretty fast. They were basically together for approx 5 hot years and then ... finito.

Thus a sudden end has an "idolizing" effect. The Nirvana singer killed himself, which is as abrupt.

psst nirvana is better then the beatles

I loved all the nirvana cds except bleach and i recently got the greatest hits album pretty good but could have been better and longer it was only 50 min or something like that.

Anyway why is nirvana so good no real reason but why is led zepplin so good i don't really think they are. Stairway to heaven is a good song and kashmir but most of zepplins stuff isnt so good. And why are the beatles so good they don't sound that great i like them but i like nirvana more.
