»Does anyone here play golf?«

sangu:
...they say its for old guys.

rub it in Razz

25 isnt that old...is it?

the weather here has been pretty nice lately, i thought to myself that i needed some type of activity to get me outside and out of my apartment. im either at work sitting in front of a computer screen or at home sitting on the couch...in front of a television screen, it gets kinda boring. my first thought was to pick up tennis again, i already have three really nice tennis racquets...but my knees arent like they used to be (damn, i do feel old) and that requires too much running around Thumb Down

a really good friend of mine plays and has always been into it and i have played with him and his family a couple times...well tried to play. i always had fun even though i was horrible at it. he talked me into picking it up, and here i am. the point he made that sold me on it was, what other sport can you drink beer while playing?

my first thought was, hmm, it cant be that hard if i just really try, now can it? man, was i wrong! if it was that easy we would see a lot more people playing as pros. its very complicated, i mean, sure you could step up and hit the ball just about everytime...but does it go where you want it to? its hard to get that little ball to fly straight...honestly, sometimes its hard to hit the ball period.

i did notice, when we were at the driving range, there were a lot of younger guys (about my age range) on the driving range and from the traffic we saw on the course it was about even...younger guys and older guys...but it was still all guys, no women.
sangu:
i just realized what that implied...

White laugh haha, its ok no harm done

Hmm...that's strange because up here lots of women play golf that are our age. I'm thinking it has to do w/your beer drinking statement...I mean, we are Wisconsin after all! We have more breweries here than any other state in the nation! White laugh

i knew this would happen

so i just got an email from my girlfriend..ahem..telling me how she is worried that i want to play golf because it is a dangerous sport, she even found a news article to support her claim...here it is:
Woman Killed in Michigan Golf-Cart Crash

Mon May 9, 9:25 PM ET

ROBINSON TOWNSHIP, Mich. - Two souped-up golf carts collided as they sped down a rural road at night, killing a woman and badly injuring a man, authorities said Monday.

...

of course...so i wrote her back telling her that she should never walk anywhere...because she could accidently fall down and injure herself White laugh

it was kinda cool though, i used that article to argue that it isnt speed that kills...that's another thread though...

anyway, just thought i would share that...incase anyone reads this thread and is interested in playing golf...be aware that there are certain dangers involved!

free instructional DVD

so i have been searching around all of the internets and found a free instructional dvd. i found it on Tour Spec Golf (some golf forum). A guy by the name of Roger Gunn is offering a free promo DVD to anyone that wants one. It's 80 minutes long with different instructional features, blah blah blah...if anyone else is interested give him an email:

roger@golflevels.com

you don't have to worry about paying for postage or anything, totally free...its not very often you find something that is totally free...mine is on the way...all you have to do is ask for it.

haha, that is funnny. White laugh your second to last post. not that most recent one.

a kid in my PE class once got beaned with a club once, so there are dangers. though it is hilarious to think of any, since golf seems such a slow paced, non contact sport. White laugh

i played a real game

yeah, that's right, i went and played an entire 18 holes yesterday.

i ordered some clubs for myself since my step dads were a little too short and were very old...i got a cloned set of the nike slingshot clubs. i have read and heard good reviews about those, that they are good for people just starting out, so i went with those.

i got off of work at 3 (because for some reason they have decided to cut my hours without telling me...did they think i wouldnt notice? I learned something new, I guess ) anyway, my clubs came in yesterday too, so we decided to go see how i do.

well, it took us about 4 hours to play all 18 holes. i lost a total of 7 balls...and we didn't really keep score. we started out keeping score on the front 9 but after that we decided not to. (but i still did in my head) we allowed mulligans but limited it to 3 per hole.

surprisingly, i kept up with my friend...he still did better over all, but then again he has been playing for a lot longer. i averaged about 3-4 strokes over par on each hole...some were worse and some were better. there were a couple holes that i got a 1 over (because i cant put worth a damn) without any mulligans or relocating the ball after a hit ...(hehe, if we drive a ball that goes out of bounds but we can find it we just throw it in the fairway from where we find it...i did that a couple times, shut up im new!)

i found out what i need to work on. i feel good about hitting the ball straight, but still need to work on it, i can always be better. the main things i need to work on are, getting more power (distance) on my drives, knowing the distance i can hit each club (and being able to figure out the distance by just looking), and chipping (i used my sand wedge the most of all my clubs)...oh and putting, god! putting isnt as easy as you would think! oh and i also need to get under the ball more, i don't get very good flight a lot of the time.

yeah. so that's why my friend told me not to keep socre...he didn't want me to get discouraged and all. its no big deal though, i know its all new to me and i didn't expect to be a great player my first real time out there. it was fun...a lot more fun than the driving range...especially hole 18...i did good on that hole actually, got a bogey, but my friend has a really bad slice and..well, miss hit a shot that ended up in the parking lot! haha

i had about 4 shots that were really good, my friend commented even...and i know how it felt to hit those...its weird, for some reason in the middle of a swing...(when its too late to stop the swing) i can kinda tell if its going to be a good hit or not, i just need to get to where i can swing that way more often...i just need more practice is all. i might even take a lesson to have someone who knows help me figure out the things im doing wrong so i don't form bad habbits.

anyway, so that was that, thought i would share if anyone cared to know.

well, even if nobody reads this thread im going to keep posting Aaah, is there anything better than to post here and to drink something

i went to the driving range this past weekend to swing some more. it seems that the club that i am most consistant with is my PW, i can hit it 100 yards and am pretty accurate, that was when i was using my fathers dunlops. the new clubs i got arent as...well, i don't know, i cant hit them that well...i guess im just not used to them.

i use my friends taylor mades, just because i love how they feel and i can get really accurate with those! i even hit the 100 yard sign twice, yes i was aiming for it.

good news! i am getting a new set of irons! my friend let me know last night that he is getting a new set of irons, some callaways. they were his fathers for this past year, his dad just took second in some tournament and is using the money he won to purchase a newer set of irons. my friend is getting his dads year old callaway irons, and my friend, who is a very awesome guy, gave me his taylor mades (taylor made 320 or something like that)! well, i am going to pay him for them ($150 price set by me...he said it sounded fair, he didn't want anything for them, but i just felt bad taking them for free, you know?) but he said to just pay him whenever i have extra cash. i will get them tuesday, when his dad gets his new clubs and the hand me downs begin.

sucks though, because the weather here calls for thunderstorms until next thursday or so...but when are they ever right?

so now im going to stick those other clubs on ebay in hopes that i can sell them and not lose to much money off of them. they were only $150 shipped...i just feel so dumb now for spending money when if i were just patient and could have held out another week or two i would have had a really nice set, blah.

stay tuned...

well crap!

i did the un-doable...i have a golf injury! White laugh

on my left hand, right below my thumb...it hurts! I don't know what to do

it all started when i would go outside with my friend while he smokes, i would take a wedge and just practice chipping with a little nerf-like foam rubber ball...we started hitting it against the wall of the next building in the apartment complex...we do that often, anyway, i suffered an injury from it.

i was told that i am gripping the club too tight and may have pulled something in my hand. damn. sucks. i cant even play video games without it hurting! and my typing skills have suffered! haha

anyway, i got in touch with some professor at my college who coaches golf and knows my mother, he has offered to give me lessons for free and maybe even take me to this country club that's like really private and expensive and such...oooh...now i cant stop thinking about »caddyshack«

"He's a Cinderella boy. Tears in his eyes, I guess, as he, as he lines up this last shot. He's got about a hundred ninety-five yards left, and he's got a... looks like he's got about an eight-iron. This crowd has gone deadly silent. Cinderella story... outta nowhere, a former greenskeeper now about to become the Masters champion."
