allone: Does anyone here play golf? Yep...as much as I can. I started playing w/my parents around 4 or 5 and have loved playing it ever since...though, that would make sense since I'm the resident jock around here. To me, I love it because it not only is a very relaxing game but it's actually very challenging mentally... posted by GP |

GP: To me, I love it because it not only is a very relaxing game but it's actually very challenging mentally... yeah, it is. its not as easy as you would think. i have played before but nothing serious. a friend of mine plays sometimes and his parents are really into it. i go and play with him and sometimes his family goes too. since the weather has been getting nice around here we have been talking about going to play again. it got me thinking...maybe i should get my own set of clubs so that i don't have to share with my friend. there is a driving range here that gives away free beer with a bucket of balls. most of my time is spent at a driving range instead of an actual course...its fun and its amazing how much practice that gives you. i haven't really had any lessons other than tips from my friend...so i suck, but im not all that bad...you can tell i have atleast swung a club before and have a basic concept of whats going on. posted by allone |

Yeah, I would definately recommend getting your clubs. Right now, since you're just picking up the game, don't spend a lot of cash on a pair of clubs that are WAAAAAYYY beyond your skill level. Just go get a decent beginners set and if you decide that, at some point, you want to "step up" your game, go get a better set. I don't think you'll need lessons...I'm pretty good and have never had a single lesson other than what my Pop's given me. The key is just to go out and play, play, play...the more you do it, the better you'll get (duh). But, since you're starting out at a driving range (which is a VERY good place to start), I'll give you one piece of advice that has done wonders for my game: Don't use just your Driver at the driving range, use all of your clubs...especially, your 5-9 irons as those are (IMO) the most crucial clubs in your bag. I've played golf w/numerous older guys that can't drive the ball as far as I can, but still beat me because their short game is insanely good. Also, volonteshiva made a good point...mini-golf is an excellent way to strengthen your putting game. The greens are quick and there's all kinds of obstacles and breaks...if you can put there, you can put on a course green. posted by GP |

yeah, my first trip to the driving range i just wanted to use my friends massivly oversized driver to just knock the crap out of some balls...the whole time he was working his irons to try and hit the pin on a couple mock greens that they have set up. i noticed and thought to myself...hmm, maybe i should try to actually hit a target instead of just seeing how far i can hit the ball. as far as clubs ago, i cant afford a really nice set, i will probably end up getting a used set that just gets the job done. i tried to look on ebay, but my friend suggested that whatever i decide to buy i should try out first to see if i like the feel of them...makes sense to me. but man, those things can be waaay expensive! isnt there a company that makes decent clubs for people who don't want to be pro? or for people that don't play that much but would like a nice set...and they don't have $1000 to spend on a set? i got kids to feed! hahaha, just kidding. my friend suggested a set of clones of some name brand clubs that i would like (his uncle has had great luck with a cloned nike set). but i have done some reading online...and the only place that says they are any good...are the websites that are selling them. of course the big brands are going to say that they suck and all. but i can imagine that they really do suck. i mean, the big brands have the money to create nice clubs, and it seems that the "clone" clubs only look the same/similar, they are probably not made with the same quality. so that rules those out...although the prices on them are really nice. i don't want to get something just because it looks like a famous brand, i would like something that actually will stay intact after hitting the ball and not fall apart wihtin a year. posted by allone |

i played mini golf tonight! i wasnt that good but i got a hole in one on the first hole, a par 3 mind you! haha, i picked up golf for about 2 months, i wanted to take lessons, but i sucked so bad, could launch the ball about 10 feet...lame as it is. i don't know how to hit or stand and i got annoyed with it so i quit. but i still love mini golf! i actually played with the drummer for MxPx ♣ haha, beat that posted by Agent Zero |

allone, I have a set of "clone" clubs and love them. They are knock-offs of the Ping Zing irons, which is one of the finest sets of irons you can buy, and have had nothing but good luck w/them. So, I would say that if you're really interested in picking up the game, buying "clone" clubs may indeed be a wise decision. The other piece of equipment that I would recommend to you is shoes. For the longest time, I thought that in no way would shoes make a difference in my game...boy, was I wrong. My Pop bought me a pair for my birthday and wow, what a difference. I don't know what they do, but for some reason, I was more balanced and my swing was much smoother. Definately see if you can find a good pair of golf shoes. Foot Joy makes the best golf shoes, but they are very expensive...try, Macgregor (sp?) shoes though...that's what I have and they've worked out great. posted by GP |

well my step dad gave me his clubs. he has only played once and said he will probably never play again. they are dunlops, kinda old and kinda short for me, but hey, they were free and they will work until i can afford to get some better ones. he had this old bag that wouldnt stand up on its own...so i went and bought a bag this past weekend. only $29 at academy, on sale from $69.99...good deal. and its one of those bags that has the pop out legs so it wills tand up. i am taking your advice, GP, and will get some shoes today...a few other people told me this same thing, that you may not notice what they do, but they do help. and i need all the help i can get i went to a driving range this past weekend too with a friend. i decided it was better to learn how to swing and hit a ball straight before trying to play a round and losing a ton of balls...again. turns out that the owner of the company that i work for was there...hes a really cool guy, and he loves golf, he stayed out there with my friend and i for about an hour helping us (turns out he also has a set of "clone clubs" and actually suggested them over name brand). man, the tips that he gave were awesome, i felt like i should have paid him for an hours worth of private lessons! by the end of the day we were hitting the balls straighter than we ever had. the distance wasnt great, but he told me to work on swinging it right first, then start to add power to it after i get the swing down. he also told me when he would be back at the course (the driving range is right infront of it) and that if we saw each other again he would help us out some more. i will say though, my friends clubs...i don't know the model name but they are like a year old taylor made...something or another...i swung his and compared to the dunlops...they felt a lot better, the clubs i have seem to vibrate a lot and hurt my hands on impact...GP, do you think that happens because i am not hitting the ball correctly? or is it the clubs? or maybe a little of both? posted by allone |

I would say that it's a little of column A...a little of column B. First, I'll address the vibration due to your swing. The vibration is probably coming from you pulling your head up to soon. This causes you to raise the blade of the club and hit the ball w/the bottom of the blade instead of the flat part of the blade. Thus, the vibration. Don't worry about this though. For beginners, the most trying obstacle to overcome is keeping your head down throughout the swing as it is natural to try and and see where the ball's going at the point of impact. The next time you're at the range, just concentrate on keeping your head down throughout your swing...trust me, you'll still be able to follow the ball. Now, on to your equipment... If your friend's clubs are Taylor Made, those are some damn nice clubs. Taylor Made sponsors ALOT of the pros in the PGA, so you know they have very good equipment. His clubs are probably not only made of a very good composite metal, but his shafts are likely made of titanium or graphite. This is important because these shafts bend and flex to allow more give in the swing. The clubs you have, in all liklihood, have a steel shaft which doesn't allow for much give...therefore, unless you strike the ball perfectly, you're hands are going to feel it...kind of like a baseball bat. posted by GP |

in that case, im just gunna have to deal with it! lol would a glove help dampen the vibration? i have yet to get one of those, or do they just help with grip? yeah, his parents are huge into golf and they like to spend money. he doesnt play as much as his parents, but that didn't stop them from spending some $$ on clubs for him. hes got a taylor made driver, king cobra fairway woods, taylor made irons and wedges and a ping putter. yeah, i like to lift my head when i swing...but i am getting better! its just hard to do that...right now its like i have to think too much to swing correctly, you know? it would be nice when i get to the point where it just comes natural. i guess all it takes is practice, just like anything else. its funny, when i do lift my head, you can really tell...i miss the ball entirely. posted by allone |
