»Texas wants to ban cheerleading as we know it«

The bill has been co-written by senator Al Edwards, who is a priest. He wants to forbid sexy outfits and certain moves.
Their wiggling bottoms, gyrating hips and seductive use of pom-poms may be part of the America’s sporting landscape, but in Texas, school cheerleaders are about to be forced to tone down their act.
Legislators in the state, famed for the Dallas Cowboy cheerleaders, have voted to crack down on “sexually suggestive” performances in schools. The law is designed to ban raunchy dance routines by cheerleaders following complaints about suggestive moves, short skirts and exposed midriffs.
...
The bill would allow the Texas Education Agency to police routines deemed vulgar or excessive, and would force schools to take action to stop them.

But the proposed restrictions are not popular with the National Cheerleaders Association or the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU).

“This broad, morally restrictive legislation reminds me of the Taleban,” said Will Harrell, director of the ACLU of Texas.“Why not go all the way? Why not require them all to wear a burka?
...
Supporters of the legislation say those kinds of excesses show why change is necessary. They want to take Texas back to simpler days, when drill teams performed traditional routines, wore patriotic clothing and longer skirts.

“There is a lack of old fashioned morality, the morality you and I grew up with,” said state Representative Carl Isett. “If I take my five-year-old son to a high school football game, I don’t want to cover his eyes when the cheerleaders are on the field."

(( Texas is the part of the American continent, where George W. Bush grew up ))

i read this a while back and tried to block it out of my mind.

the cheerleaders and dance/drill team was the only reason i would attend high school sporting events back in high school. there were a ton of times that some person on our team would score, everyone would cheer and i wouldnt know what the heck was going on...too busy watching something else...

thinking about it now, for this small east texas town that i am in, im surprised that they haven't done something like this already, this town is very conservative...the cheerleaders here (in high school) did some moves that people would consider vulgar...but nobody (that i know of) has ever complained. and their outfits...well, IMO they were great, but im sure that plenty of people would like them to cover up more...their outfits were/are your basic short skirt (that likes to fly up a lot Evil evil ) and the sleeveless tops...

argh, its just stupid! when you think of pro-nfl cheerleaders what do you think of? i hear the dallas cowboys cheerleaders are quite popular. its one of those "texas things"...they cant get rid of it!

i swear if they pass that bill, that will be the last straw...im moving out of this state!

all you really need is 88mph. that's when the flux compacitor starts to work.

the more i think about the stupider it sounds...

its just a case of some people don't like something, so lets make a law against it to satisfy those that don't like it. how about if you don't like it, don't WATCH IT. are these guys THAT bored to start regulating cheerleading?

or are they just trying to force the "christian no sexuality" viewpoint onto everyone?

simpler days? wake up, its not 1940 anymore!

drill teams in texas ARE traditional. they are unlike drill teams in other states. pretty much every high school in texas has the same uniform for their drill team, it resembles the uniform of the Kilgore College Rangerettes  (who are "world famous") they have shorter skirts because drill teams are pretty much high kick teams, that's what they do for the majority of their routines, try doing that in a skirt that goes to your ankles. (they want to ban short skirts/sexy clothing? whats next? outlawing any form of "sexy clothing" that many girls like to wear in public?)

lack of old fashioned morality? well, again its not 1940 anymore...how old is Mr. Isett?

well, i guess if they are going to get rid of the cheerleaders/drill team uniforms they are going to have to do away with the twirlers too.

some pics of cheerleaders, drill team, twirlers from my high school:

I feel sorry for those poor teenage football players, having no girls in short skirts to distract them while just about to score one for the home team... oh well.
