I would do it for any cost, basically.

Now, the catch, of course, is in what state you remain immortal. Young? Or do you keep getting older and more decrepit? Are you eventually just a brain in a jar?

i know what you mean Tiefling...do you just stop aging? or does your body just never shut down and keep growing older...does your body get weak and frail/ unable to move or even speak, but unable to die.

i don't think i would want to be immortal, i mean, if you could NEVER die...it would be strange for me. i mean, it would be really cool and all to be able to see things in the future and all, but times change.

imagine if you were immortal and have been around since 1400 or so. the way things have changed since then, its like a whole different world in a way. yeah, you would have all the time in the world to learn how to use the new technologies, but i would feel "out of place". you could have gained a huge fortune and be very well off, but it would be hard to live...you would have to have all fake identification.

what if something happens to kill off humans? but you are immortal so you stay alive...the only living human on the planet...what if you were taken prisoner for some reason and thrown in a cell to be forgotten about/die, starved...you would just remain in the cell forever...

if you really had the chance to live forever...its something that you would really need to think about before you make your choice.

i used to think it would be awesome...but after reading the vampire chronicles i have rethought it, and don't think that i would...but then again, i don't know, i cant decide...

EDIT: i just read the entire title of the thread, "If science were to find a way..." so you can forget what I said about having to get fake ID's and such since it could be done and widely known and all, and being immortal would not be unheard of.

well, not if the science that did it was outlawed, and becoming an immortal was declared illegal. (which i could see happening because of religious reasons(among many other reasons)..."the cost of sin is death" and we are "all born sinners" but you cannot die? does this make god a liar? uh-oh)

there again, if it was discovered that you were an illegal immortal, how would they handle you? throw you in a cell for eternity? that would suck.

all you really need is 88mph. that's when the flux compacitor starts to work.

another quick thought

actually, we can keep people "alive" now with the technology we already have...in some cases. but are they really alive? would you want to be kept on life support, but a vegetable?

There is a problem. It' should say "physical immortality" and not "immortality".

I would choose immortality. So long as I could choose what state of physical being I was immortalising (like someone said, I don't want to be paralysed and immortal), I'd do it and even try to devote my energies to making the money for it if it was expensive. Sadly I don't think it would be developed in the next 10 years..

I love to be able to read all I can and see the changes in the world from one generation to the next to the fifteenth down the line and so on. I want to be able to try everything. Change is exciting and to witness it occur around you would be marvy. It would also be marvy to witness the 'end of the world', if there was any such thing. Would I be immortal only on earth or would I float around bored in space or whatever was left, if the earth was destroyed? And would I be doing something wrong in choosing to not end a life that normally should? Would we become the 'mutants' that sci-fi movies talk about?
