Vampires are usually her passion, but Anne Rice is getting biblical in her next book, due out in November from publisher Random House. "Christ the Lord: Out of Egypt" will tell the story of Jesus' early years in his own words. Any thoughts? posted by holy_of_holies |

That's cool. One time I ordered a used later-edition book online, Count Zero by William Gibson, and they sent me a signed first edition. Didn't Anne Rice move out of that house? What was it called again? posted by holy_of_holies |

I've been to Anne Rice's house. ... Before you get too excited, I mean this literally --- I stood outside of it, not inside of it. Rice's writing has been getting really bad for quite some time. I have a feeling this new book will be just as bad. posted by Tiefling |

Tiefling: I've been to Anne Rice's house. haha, holy moly. i totally thought that you were friends with her, and had a cup of GP couldn't have top that "friends with a celebrity" thing if you were tight with anne rice. i haven't read any of her books, since her genre doesn't really interest me, so no comment. posted by sangu |

I already posted about this on the shoutbox, but then I remembered I had started a topic on it a long time ago when it was first announced. This book ( Christ the Lord: Out of Egypt ) is in stores now. I think I'm going to go buy it tomorrow and read it. The way I see it, the problem with all the novels I read these days - like my most recent read, The Historian - is that I can see what the author is trying to say long before they really say it, and so when I get to the end I might as well not have read the book except for the first few chapters. But if it's a book based on the Gospels, stories I know very well, then I can give up on the whole notion of suspense and go for just the storytelling and style itself. Hopefully this will be a good book; it has gotten excellent reviews. Here is Anne Rice's own page with a bunch of reviews of the book: [CLICK HERE TO VIEW THIS PICTURE] posted by MindSlave |

knn: Please no more "I know what REALLY happened to Jesus" books...
This subject has been overused... I don't think Rice's object in writing this book is to tell "what really happened," although she apparently did a lot of research into New Testament scholarship. Christ the Lord: Out of Egypt is more of a fictionalized personal and biographical statement by Jesus. For instance, I've got it and read the first few pages; on the first page, Jesus describes killing a bully without touching him, through some kind of power he doesn't understand. I really think it's an interesting concept for a novel. posted by MindSlave |

MindSlave: I really think it's an interesting concept for a novel. I read too many of those "apocryphic novels". I think if someone is writing such a book, he is not producing a "fiction book" but tries to sell his channelled visions as a "novel". I read once too often, how wonderfully blue Jesus' eyes were posted by knn |

knn: I think if someone is writing such a book, he is not producing a "fiction book" but tries to sell his channelled visions as a "novel". I don't see what the major difference is between writing a Jesus novel and writing a King Arthur novel; plenty of people write Arthurian novels and some of them, like The Once and Future King , are considered modern fantasy classics. If you ask me, the only major differentiating factor is that Jesus novels are based on a character who is, in my opinion, probably totally fictional, while King Arthur may have some basis in fact. The fact that Anne Rice is a Catholic who is writing about Jesus should have no more bearing on the merits of her fiction than the fact that The Once and Future King author T.H. White was a British subject writing about King Arthur. posted by MindSlave |
