»"Papio and Deinonychus" by holy_of_holies«

This was an illustration I did for one of my papers on dinosaurs. Basically, I was trying to prove that primates could have evolved from dinosaurs.

The image on the left is the skull of a male baboon (Papio hamadryas) and the image on the left is the skull of a dinosaur (Deinonychus antirrhopus). The numbered points are called synapomorphies, meaning points of similarity in form.

Here are the names of the numbered features:
1, maxillary fenestras (Deinonychus) and infraorbital foramens (Papio;) 2, antorbital fenestra (Deinonychus) and maxillary depression (Papio;) 3, upper lacrymal crests (Deinonychus) and supraorbital ridges (Papio).

Just to put this in cultural context, the dinosaur whose skull I draw is the same one called Velociraptor in the novel and movie »Jurassic Park«. Michael Crichton changed the name and Spielberg used the wrong dinosaur in the film. The real Velociraptor is very small compared to Deinonychus.
