Enforcement Issues

That would be kind of difficult to enforce, no?

But from what I've seen with the way my friends treat their kids, I definitely think something like that would be a positive development if they could find a way to enforce it.
Because what would you do if someone violated the rule? Take away their kid?

Ouch.

New avatar BTW.

LONDON, England., May 27, 2005 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Amnesty International, the well known human rights group, has issued its 2005 Amnesty International report which again shows China's continuing abuse of women due to the one-child policy. Successive reports indicating such abuses have, however, failed to convince the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) to abandon its relationship with the Chinese population control program. They have also evidently failed to convince Canada and other nations to follow the lead of the United States and refuse funding to UNFPA based on their complicity with China's coercive abortion regime.

The Amnesty International 2005 report states that "Serious violations against women and girls continued to be reported as a result of the enforcement of the family planning policy, including forced abortions and sterilizations." The report gives the specific example of one woman's experiences.

Closer to the Source

Serious violations against women and girls continued to be reported as a result of the enforcement of the family planning policy, including forced abortions and sterilizations. In July the authorities publicly reinforced a ban on the selective abortion of female foetuses in an attempt to reverse a growing gap in the boy-girl birth ratio.

and only the females too right?

I vote for parenting classes for some, but how do you know someone is going to be a bad parent until it's way too late?

what i meant was...i don't think those countries that ONEder mentionned enforces "licensing" like im proposing...but they do have certain population control regimes like the article suggests, and unfortunately i doubt its just china that's doing this. what gets me is that canada is still funding it which i didn't realize.

but anyways i think that's a completely different issue when you compare having people apply for licenses to have children in north america to controlling the population of the world in certain countries...

i don't think im explaining it right, sorry...

Not Canada's Fault

It's probably mainly China, because they're the only country with a population problem as well as a government capable of enforcing such a thing. I doubt it happens in India. But Canada isn't funding it, that's pro-life propaganda. I never should have posted that; look at the Amnesty one though.

Parenting classes would be good. The problem I see is that in the circles I frequent (working class mostly) there is a tremendous substance abuse problem, which is like the AIDS of parenting. Once you get substance abuse, all the other little problems start to creep in.

there are so many holes to the question that you can completely argue...i think parenting classes should be mandatory for anyone...its just that sometimes i see people on tv (mostly trash tv but still) or i hear stories about women not knowing who the fathers of their babies are, or mothers and fathers abandoning their kids, the whole substance abuse issue you brought up of course, mothers going out clubbing and leaving their babies to die in their cribs...and so on and so fourth..and i wonder ... is having a child a right? or a priviledge...sometimes i want to take these people by their hair and slap them silly, they just get me so riled up

i don't know
