»Tech calls I Receive«

Why have I not thought of this before? I would like to share with people some of the calls/conversations that I have with people while at work.

remember, I work for a small ISP, we provide internet access and email addresses for our customers. we provide help to them if they have trouble logging on or problems with their email and so on. although a lot of people (even people who are NOT customers of ours) seem to think that we are some type of free fix-it-all repair-it-over-the-phone center who can and will fix anything related to computers...and then they get rather angry at us when we tell them that we cannot help them when their computer will not recognize their new digital camera. Not again

ill start with the most popular of all the calls i get...it goes a little something like this...

me-"tech support"

customer-"yeah, uh hey...um, i cant connect to the internet"

m"what error message are you getting?"

c-"uh...whats that?"

m"when you dial up and it wont connect it sometimes gives an error number and message"

c-"oh, um...let me try"

(i hear the line picking up)

c-"yeah, it says no dial tone"

m"you only have one phone line don't you?"
c-"yeah..."

m"i tell you what, go ahead and restart your computer, when it comes back up try to dial again, and if it will not work write down the error message and call me back, oK?"

c-"ok!"

(three minutes later)

customer-"it says error 691, the acce..."

me"access was denied because the username and or password is invalid?"

c-"yeah!"

m"did you try and RETYPE them?"

c-"no, why should i do that?"

m"invalid username/password means that one of the two is invalid.."

c-"..."

m"either your username or your password was typed in WRONG"

c-"but it isnt! i know, because i typed it in myself"

m"its wrong, its not going to say its invalid unless its wrong, try retyping it and then do it again"

(i hear the line pick up again)

m"yeah, youre going to have to get off the phone first...you know, since you only have one phone line...and it needs to use the phone line"

...i go through this so many times a day, its unbelievable.

another good one:

i was talking with an older woman for a loooong time, she kept saying how her computer is broken and will not turn on. she seemed nice and i wasnt busy so i decided to try and help her out.

to make it short, i forget all the details that we went through, her monitor was turned off and she didn't know how to turn it on.

on top of taking in tech calls, i also answer the emails directed to our support address. i get some really good ones in there too...

the best i can think of right now:

" Hi,
I can't seem to get my email to work, I cannot send or receive any emails! PLEASE help me with this problem! I am paying for the email but I cannot use it! IT IS VERY FRUSTRATING!

Thanks you "

how do you reply to that?

well, what i did was this...

"(customer),
it seems as though your email is working fine, we received this email without any problems, and if you are reading this one, then you too can receive emails fine also. if you have any further problems please feel free to contact us by phone.

thank you. "

but that's not good enough, they write back...by way of 'reply' still insisting that their email does not work...

i read this paper where they had a bunch of tech calls:
one of the few i remembered was where a customer couldn't move the mouse properly because of the dust cover on. the dust cover turned out to be the plastic wrap.

another was where someone used the CD drive thingy as a cup holder.

and there were a few where they go through 45 min of help, only to find out they didn't plug it in.
White laugh all around. Aaah, is there anything better than to post here and to drink something

Oh, there's much worse than that

This is from way back, this call was taken by a friend of mine

A guy calls in complaining his computer won't switch on, when asked what happened he said it had worked great the night before, but when he came to switch it on now it wouldn't start.

Robert: So you've checked that the power plug is still in the socket and the socket is switched on?
Customer: Yeah!
Robert: And the PC is switched on?
Customer: Yeah!
Robert: Have you checked to make sure the power cable is still in the back of the PC
Customer: Hold On

... Pause ...

Customer: It's a little difficult to tell, because of where the PC is
Robert: how so?
Customer: Well the computer is in the corner and not near a window, and I only have the light from the window since the power went off. But I'm pretty sure the cable is in.

I learned something new, I guess
