Quote: God shouldn't be depicted as a human male, unless people are attributing male reproductive organs to him as well... the only reason i see to personify God was because "man was made in God's image" or something to that effect... posted by The ONEder Man |

Good point. So maybe in ancient times God was thought of as a Zeus-like figure? posted by Tiefling |

What we are talking about here is the famous Sistine chapel image of God reaching his arms down to touch Adam's outstretched hand. The view of God as a bearded man in the sky. I don't know whether you count the renaissance as 'ancient'. posted by fatpie42 |

My point being, that image probably came from centuries of preconceived notions of how God looked. posted by Tiefling |

Man always imagined his gods looking like him, or gave them the form he could understand. Most religions have a human-like figure for an image of God. I personally don't like this particular picture; in Russian Orthodox tradition he has never been blond or blue-eyed. The point is, if there were a nation of let's say thinking triangles, and they would invent a religion, their god would look like a triangle most probably. The same with humans. Whatever powers their gods have, when they have to depict them somehow, they make them look human. In Greece they had a bunch of gods, all "responsible" for different things, but all looking human. At least that works when gods of higher rank are concerned. Subsurvient divine creatures, like satires, demons, angels and whatever, may have some unhuman features. posted by mymla |

Quote: It so bothers me that Jesus is depicted as a golden-haired, pale-skinned, frail, angelic-looking person. yeah, it bothers me too... Quote: God being an old man wearing white with a long beard and a stern look on his face (kind of like Gandalf, but with more fire & brimstone at his disposal) i agree...I mean, if God could be anything he wanted to be, why would he want to be an old man, of all things? I know an old man, he smells like crap and has ugly teeth posted by nocturnal_anonymous |

It's supposed to be depicting him as an old, wise, loving but firm father-figure. posted by fatpie42 |

fatpie42: It's supposed to be depicting him as an old, wise, loving but firm father-figure. heh...I know, I was just being...a bit...um...what's the word...smart aleck? STILL, who's read Catherine, Called Birdy? The book talks a bit about God and His appearance, because Catherine tries to paint a mural of heaven and earth and she is debating what God really looks like. I don't think God looks old and Gandalfy, that just ruins the whole image of His perfection. and knn, that message thing that says "STOP! BLABLABLA..." that thing scares me. it makes me not want to post as much anymore cuz i'm scared you'll move my posts! and now i can't reply to posts that i want to...in fear of getting it moved! i'm scared. o yea...don't move this post. posted by nocturnal_anonymous |

Shouldn't the Church declare it to be some sort of blasphemy to personify God? If God existed before the beginning of the universe, to personify God would be to make God less magnificent. That sounds counter to the principles of the Church. posted by Tiefling |
