ryder: Hey I wonder if everyone could post pictures of things individual to their country.. but would that become too elaborate?
Coz this is just too gosh-darned interesting. And especially for people who might never get the chance to travel to these places. So it is pretty simple just upload some pictures, spout some sayings or do other stuff that shows of your amazing Country. I will go first with some Canian animals. 1.The killer whale, its actual name is the Orca whale and they are a fairly commen site wher I live, if you take the fairie from Victoria to Vancouver you will usually see at least one "pod of orcas" they are pretty small for whales, but the look cool and are fairly canadian. 2.Grizzley bear, they are huge and can run sooo fast they are literally super animals, they are pretty rare but i have seen a few, living on a forest island and all and they are pretty scary because they look at you for a bit and then lumber back where they came from. 3.Beaver, they are sooo cute specially babay beavers and they were pretty commen in streams where I used to live, the damms they make are huge and all around the damm trees are either completely taken down or barely upright because the beavers have taken huge chunks out of the tree so the pat holding the tree up is literally a pencil. 4.Moose, these things are huge and mean I would be more scard to run into a moose then a grizzley, that being said though I have seen a few but not up close. These are really cool animals that swim up the rivers in Florida in the cooler months...they are interesting to see when you are canoeing, because they surface and exhale like a whale, making a spouting sound. Manatees are mammals, so they breathe air, which puts them at risk for sometimes getting hit by boat propellers...they eat clumps of weeds that grow on top of the water. They are very endangered because of the boat problem, so there is a big "Save the Manatee" campaign, though some people who have lived in Florida a long time will tell you that manatees are everywhere now compared to a few decades ago. Being a native of "God's own country" Yorkshire, we are indoctrinated at birth to nurture at least one of the three following native creatures. 1. Whippet. A kind of dog that can run as fast a light... I would show you a picture of one running, but science hasn't invented a shutter speed fast enough to capture one yet. They are so thin they are the lightest creature known to man and must eat lead to stop themselves floating away. 2. Pigeon. A kind of bird. Exactly the opposite of the whippet, built like a tank and twice as hard. They spend most of their time walking, because, well hell they sure as shit struggle to fly. 3. Ferret. A kind of...erm...dunno...rat I suppose. These creatures are used to ward off evil spirits such as TV presenters by mainly chewing on their fingers. The nesting place for this creature is usually the crotch area of trousers, but only if they are being worn. I've since moved to Tenerife where the creatures aren't nearly as interesting, Dolphins, Whales, Sharks, Wild Parrots, Lizards and other mundane creatures. I have to give a bit of background before I go any further, well, just for the fun of it. I was born in a southern state called tamil nadu ♣, but I stayed in another southern state called kerala ♣, and now for college i'm back in TN. Kerala has been called "God's Own Country" by many, because of it's natural beauty and idyllic scenes. Tamil Nadu is one of the most developed states in India, and I stay in it's capital, one of the metropolitan cities of course. India's culture is a mixture of a wide variety of cultures. So I don't think one post would be sufficient to give you an idea of what it's like here. But to keep things short, I'll give a brief overview. Politics - we are a democratic republic. We have many political parties in the foray, but 2 major ones and a coupla others. Our PM is Dr. Manmohan Singh ♣. Our Prez is Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam ♣ . Religion - many people associate India with "Hinduism", which is actually the collective name given to all the indigenous religions. There are many Christians and Muslims of course, but that was from mass conversion and foreign settlers. Music and dance - we have wonderful classical and folk styles. Classical is more centred on the southern regions, and Folk to the north. Western do-re-mi-fa-so-la-ti is Classical sa-re-ga-ma-pa-da-ni.. People - we have a diverse range of people here, from the slick urbanite to the village simpleton to the jungle tribe to the politician:evilevil: . Places - There are a wide variety of places here, each state having it's own individual identity. There have been a wide range of civilizations that settled here, each having left their own mark on our history and our land. The most famous building here must be the Taj Mahal (picture below) though, a monument of love, they call it. I've also attached a picture of a simple village setting in Coastal Kerala.. it was a real picture that I had to rescale, done very roughly and so the quality might be lost. Animals - I've attached some pictures below. A special note on the pigeons: I share a very curious relationship with them here, you see. To combat the intolerable heat we had 2 a/cs installed in the house, one in my bedroom (loong ago). Now the ac does not work and I am left to the heat. A pigeon found it comfortable, though, and made a nest in the ac, and has had a family, and is now teaching the kids how to fly. The kids are also fighting a lot. Yeah. The wonderful thing about India is that it is a world of it's own. It has everything, every opposite pole. It surprises many that we haven't fallen to pieces already - unity in diversity they call it. I'll add more when it strikes me. You see, this is totally out of character for me. Only recently did I actually start appreciating more of the good points of my country. Oh, and we don't always do the typical "velkham to Indiya" and "my canthri vairy vairy beeg" and all that.. One of the main problems our image has is the "turbaned fakir" stereotype. We do have them of course, but they're not all of us.. i just wanted to add the redneck olympics of the good ol US of A, i think they are unique, or god i hope they are Georgia is the heart of America's redneck territory, so it's no surprise that the Redneck Games are held here in East Dublin. This is stereotypical beer, barbeque and arm fart country, a place where bent coat-hangers with aluminum foil serve as antennas and good ol' country boys keep both dogs and wallets on chains. Originally dubbed the Bubba-Olympics in 1995, the event is an outrageous, politically incorrect spoof the real 1966 Olympics held in Atlanta. Country radio station WQZY started the games as a promotional stunt, garnering so much publicity that newspapers and television stations all over the country started covering them. Of the 10,000 folks who attend today, very few are true rednecks. Most are just faux rednecks that return to their mainstream lives come Monday morning.
The games themselves are down-and-dirty events like bobbing for pig's feet, seed spitting, dumpster diving, hubcap hurling, bug zapping by spitball, an armpit serenade and a big-hair contest. The defining moment, though, is the mud pit belly flop, mostly entered by those with beer bellies and peek-a-boo butt cracks. The trophy is a crushed and mounted Bud Light can, disappointingly empty. L-Bow, the grand guru of the event, claims they're "just plain good ol' boys and gals who'd give you the shirt off their back, although it's doubtful you'd want it". Fried alligator on a stick is a favorite festival treat. [CLICK HERE TO VIEW THIS PICTURE] [CLICK HERE TO VIEW THIS PICTURE] posted by The ONEder Man |

gkiss: 1) the armadillo
2) the longhorn so ENJOY! allone...i hope i've made you proud...haha! haha, yes, you have made me proud...although this thread is about countries, not states. Texas isnt its own country...anymore. if i had to put something here that i think people think of when they think of the USA...i guess it would have to be like...apple pie...heck i don't know, haha... but really, in the US each state, even though they are just part of a whole, are all distinct in some way or another. i don't know much about other states, i haven't been to many of them...but i would like to add some things that are distinct to Texas... the alamo...its a spanish mission (there are a lot in Texas, especially around the San Antonio area) but it holds some significance in the history of Texas and is a landmark here...all that stands left of it now is just a small portion of what it once was. cowboys and cattle...no need to explain that one oil: oil is big in Texas, in fact, my new job is in the oil and natural gas industry...it keeps me very busy..(that's where im at right now..shh) East Texas Oil Museum: football is huge here...especially high school football...has anyone seen Six Flags: there is a series of theme parks with 'six flags' in the title, they are all over the US, but the very first one was in Texas (started by a wealthy oil tycoon), and the name Six Flags holds meaning in Texas. There have been Six different flags flown over Texas throughout its history, the Fleur-de-lis of France, and the national flags of Spain, Mexico, the Republic of Texas, the United States of America and the Confederate States of America. GUNS! we have a lot of guns around here...go watch the movie Bowie Knife: i don't know if anyone really knows where these come from...but im sure people have seen them, the name comes from Jim Bowie..he fought at the Alamo. oh...while were talking about it, Davy Crockett fought there too. that's all i am going to put here, since this is really about countries...i could probably write a freaking book on Texas History...meh, if anyone wants to know anything about Texas history, just ask me [CLICK HERE TO VIEW THIS PICTURE] [CLICK HERE TO VIEW THIS PICTURE] [CLICK HERE TO VIEW THIS PICTURE] posted by allone |
