Americans are so stereotyped by other countries that we're stupid Besides, we have more competition than other countries (except maybe Asian and other overpopulated countries) to get into college and get jobs and such because there are so many people in the country. posted by nocturnal_anonymous |

..Americans are stupid, you have just as many smart people as any other country, no one disputes that. When they say 'stupid' i guess they mean you are so suseptible to your media and what they tell you that we think your a bit daft sometimes. you should all start to read Papers from other countries to get an idea whats happening outside of the US. posted by Crossfade |

Look, I don't think Americans are stupid. I think Crossfade is right though. You do seem a bit gullible sometimes. Anyone who believes the blatant propaganda of FOX news should be shot for the sake of natural selection. It is often believed that Americans don't understand sarcasm or subtlety (a stereotype not helped by hollywood movies). posted by fatpie42 |

but i do think a good number of them are ignorant, in the sense that they have no clue about the world outside the US.. but obviously u can't generalise with any nation and say all people from this country are this or that. posted by wAkE_uP_nEo |

please let me specify. ONLY Americans that buy into the propoganda the American government uses to control our minds seem ignorant and gullible to foreigners. Besides, I don't blame them [the us citizens that fall for the biased news]. It's hard to escape from it's grasp when it's practically everywhere you go, even if you don't watch tv. posted by nocturnal_anonymous |

Quote: Hey try reading the header to that sentence please! heh...sorry crossfade don't kill me... Quote: Quote: u can't generalise with any nation
Sure you can, otherwise all generalizations would be illegal and no science could have ever been developed. keyword here knn, is nation. If you generalize a nation, you are assuming that all citizens of that particular country is so and so...and that is definitely not true, as there are always exceptions to the rule, and every person has their own opinions and thoughts, regardless of how stereotyped a particular country might be. If you're generalizing America by characterizing the citizens of it as ignorant, gullible, and stupid, than you're calling ME stupid too posted by nocturnal_anonymous |

Quote: If you generalize a nation, you are assuming that all citizens of that particular country is so and so No, generalization means, that "most of the time it's true" or that it's "usually true". Of course there can be exceptions. For example if you say: "After 10pm this street is dangerous, because of gangsters" then this is of course a generalization. Or if you say "This restaurant has good food". How could you ever know that this restaurant has always good food under any circumstances? You see: Generalizations are allowed and are an important part of our everydays statements. A friend of mine (who come from Europe) was asked in the US whether they have fridges in Europe. And whether she came by train from Europe. Another one was asked, whether Russians comb their hair. George W. Bush asked whether there are blacks in Brazil. Thus USAnians are stupid can be legitimate. posted by knn |

Quote: we have more competition than other countries (except maybe Asian and other overpopulated countries) to get into college and get jobs and such because there are so many people in the country. hmm is that really true? I somehow think everyone could say that about their own country. As far as I know you have one of the easiest ways of getting into a university: sending your school grades to a few you like and seeing which ones accepts. Sorry if some words are wrong, but I believe the principle is like that, or? In Russia you can only try one at a time, with passing all the exams they set, almost no matter how good you were at school. The same with jobs. Is there by any way a belief among the people that foreigners and new-comers get all the best jobs? That for one just graduationg from college it's impossible to find work? Quote: If you generalize a nation, you are assuming that all citizens of that particular country is so and so I'd agree with knn that it is wrong to see it that way. When you are generalizing you just say that "it is believed that in general they are ...". It doesn't mean that someone generalizing is 100% sure that every single one is like that. And Nocturnal, please don't take this all personally. I think everyone in this forum will agree that you are as far from falling under the generalisation as possible. But if you want to know what people in general think about Americans - well, there you go. Many Americans I have met don't exactly fit to my view of "clever", no matter why they are that way. The problem with many is that they just don't realize that they could be better or know more. They don't even try to. But that's a general problem in this world. People don't like Bush so much exactly because he just so well fits their ideas about USAnians. A typical example, so to say... But if you ask any one who says "Americans are stupid" whether (s)he thinks all of them are stupid, I am sure (s)he will disagree. posted by mymla |

you can't tell me you guys' countries don't have a majority of stupid people in them? that's just the way the world works...most are dumb or average, a few stand out...i would much like to defend my fellow americans but as i see it, more and more people are like this...i don't like the generalization either, but from the outside view point i can see where you are coming from...just look at the people that get on american t.v.shows...as knn pointed out jerry springer? 'nuff said... i must point out though, if we are mostly dumb why do we lead the world in new technology? (i think japan may market more patents on a yearly basis though) posted by The ONEder Man |
