 theres a God who needs to be killed. hes the one the world sees in movies and on billboards. the one in broadway musicals and hard rock songs. the one on the cover of Time and the bumpers of cars. the one who sells his Passion for $19.95. the one who has his own television station. hes the one on the cover of the latest self-help book. the one on posters in church buildings. the one who wants you slim or rich or famous. the one who hangs around peoples necks. the one they spend Sunday being bored with. hes the one in gravy stains on refrigerators. the one whos face is on the burial cloth. the one reaching down from the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. the one in stained glass. the one standing tall over Rios de Janeiro as well as Eureka Springs Arkansas. hes the one whos a Republican or Democrat. the one who is anglo or afro or asian. the one who is orthodox or liberal. the one on my side not yours. the one the atheists and xians both disgrace with their words and actions. this God is a joke. a jester. a clown. a game-show host for heaven. this God is a phony. a fluke. a fantasy. a curio shop paper-weight. this God does not exist and he needs to die. there is a God who has been popularized and thereby marginalized by the western culture - especially in America and especially in the past century. i propose killing him off entirely. he is not a God at all. he is a myth. a figment of our collective imagination. he doesnt exist and he needs to die. the culture and xianity have become so fused as to present a unified understanding of this God. hollywood defames him in movies while preachers do it at the local church. atheists deny his existence with their theories while xians do it with their actions. few have any grasp of their own ideas about him as being anything other than strict reality when in fact the vast majority of people have had their views shaped by a paradigmmatic way of thinking polluted by culture and philosophy. so that's why im here. posted by graceshaker |

 So.. you're saying this God does not exist, and you're saying you need to kill Him? And you're saying He was made by people who want him to exist in order to destroy him? 
Oh, didn't you hear? God is dead ♣ already..

i know that nietzsche wrote that in a story. in fact in the story those words come out of the mouth of a madman. have you ever read it? nietzsches point and mine are very similar. just as he doubted and maligned the popular xian notion of God - so too do i. posted by graceshaker |

graceshaker: have you ever read it? Well I'm reading it at present, about halfway through. I've got exams now so I've shelved it to continue when they're over. I wouldn't exactly call it a story though. More like an interesting way of propounding a personal belief/system. Nietzsche's point was that the popular notion of God demeaned human existence and so he wanted to deny it. He said if there was a God he was only in fact the idealisation of the best within every human, and to achieve this we had to overthrow every supressive factor and reach for the 'superman' within. Sounds like a teenage feel-good movie eh.. 
So if you 'deny' this popular God do you have any particular views of your own you'd share? posted by ryder |

 I guess we sort of agree.. that if there was a God, He wouldn't exactly be the popular Xian version. Perhaps He wouldn't be God by our definition at all, but God because He is the supreme being. So you're very understandable in saying you want to kill God.. and like all good philosophers, Nietzsche was ahead of his time. But I don't understand why people believe in God.  posted by ryder |
