»Belle and Sebastian«

I am going to post this even though I know a lot of you are into heavier music; this is a Scottish band that got started in 1996. I just got their album "The Boy with the Arab Strap" and it is so good...reminds me of the later Beach Boys albums. Another valid comparison that is frequently made is with the Smiths, and this is fair although Belle and Sebastian are much less experimental than the Smiths at least on "Arab Strap". But comparing these two bands is like comparing the Beach Boys and the Beatles: the Smiths like the Beatles were daring and groundbreaking, while Belle and Sebastian like the Beach Boys are more into perfecting their own sound. Plus Belle and Sebastian have no obnoxiously egotistical Morrissey to ruin the fun.

I Fought in a War

Since I started this topic, I have gotten two more Belle and Sebastian albums, one called "Fold Your Hands Child, You Walk Like a Peasant" and another, "If You're Feeling Sinister." My favorite song on either of these is "I Fought in a War," the first track on "Fold Your Hands Child, You Walk Like a Peasant." It starts off with the just the singer singing the first verse, then guitar comes in, then bass and drums, then violins, then trumpet. So it really builds, and it's a great composition. The melody is very haunting; the lyrics are in the voice of a soldier who died in a war, but he somehow is composing a letter to send home to his girlfriend, saying things like "Well it won't hurt to think of you as if you're waiting for this letter to arrive, because I'll be here quite a while." I don't know what to do
