volonteshiva: mymla: It's nice to know you will live long, but to be more serious in this gruesome thread, how much fun do you think it is to live and see all your friends die? Well, if you are committed to living long or being immortal, you would have to develop a rather strong fortitude again the emotional pain from the death of others. You would have to accept it as a cycle of live and make new friends and attachments. Or live a solitary life if you don't have that kind of fortitude. It would be hard for the 1st generation or 2, but if you were really committed to living for forever and continuing to grow, you would have to learn to deal with loss well. volonteshiva: mymla: Who wants to live forever?
Well, if you would be one immortal being amongst mortals, that would be hard... it seems to me that hwoever hard you learn to not develop any deep feelings, every now and then you might meet somebody where you just won't be able to help it... So the only way is to live alone, but what it the point of being immortal than Well, since we our exploring an imaginary concept at this point, immortality, I would reference the material on the tv show Highlander. They deal with this issue often. If a relationship ends painfully(death) then the immortal may spend 50+yrs alone. Some immortals become cold and begin to just use people for their carnal needs. I think there are those immortals who would continue to feel the pain, but also continue to adjust and move on. posted by volonteshiva |

I think that one could indeed enjoy being immortal but you would really have to change / strengthen your mindset. You couldn't let one generation's death crush you emotionally. Also in this thread, we are talking about staying relatively the same youthful age. i.e. 30 or so. Not being old and frail and immortal. posted by volonteshiva |

You should change the thread title. It's not about immortality but about bodies that don't die (= bodily immortality). posted by knn |

i would have the fear of feeling all alone in the world. i mean, if you were to be immortal, a single day to you would probably not be the same as a single day to me (a mortal) time would fly really fast, don't you think? and even though you may make friends in a new generation, they would be dead and gone before you knew it...so what would be the point really? and, it would get increasingly hard to verify who you are. i mean, imagine whosing your drivers license with the birth date of 5-18-1980...in the year 2525. unless, of course, immortals were a common thing...then you also wouldnt have to worry about friends who would die. posted by allone |

knn: You should change the thread title. It's not about immortality but about bodies that don't die (= bodily immortality). Well, it's about a mental and physical, conscious, immortal existence. Not just about bodies that don't die. Put me in suspended animation. My body is now immortal, but I am not "living" immortally. posted by volonteshiva |

Indeed, you could not maintain your mortal perceptions into immortality. It doesn't mean you have to become emotionally cold though. Indeed your perceptions on time would change as well, but that doesn't mean it would have to be for the worse. Whereas generations may seem to pass by quickly, it would allow you to experience the life of a civilization. You would have a very unique and interesting view on existence. You could also view many different types of mortal existence and compare differences / similarities through the generations. i.e. Being an immortal scientist/psychologist may be the way to go. posted by volonteshiva |

We lose a lot of friends & loved ones if we're simple mortals too. I think there're ppl coming & going in & out of our lives all the time. So, it'd be great though unfortunately being immortal is impossible posted by a |

a: So, it'd be great though unfortunately being immortal is impossible Why do you say impossible? You mean it's impossible for a person to deal with the loss generation after generation or you saying scientifically that we cannot live immortal corporeal existences? If it's the latter, that is true now but may not always be. With a vast reduction of free radicals in our bodies that are much of the cause of our aging, we would live a good deal longer... posted by volonteshiva |

Immortality to what extent? Would I die if someone chopped off my head, or if I came down with cancer, or if I stopped eating? As callous as it might sound, I see no flaws with immortality. That is, with me being immortal. Unfortunately, if everyone were immortal, life would probably really suck. How would society function if everyone were immortal? How would you punish people? Imagine the new definition of a "life sentence." Imagine never being able to retire. posted by Tiefling |

Tiefling: Immortality to what extent? Would I die if someone chopped off my head, or if I came down with cancer, or if I stopped eating? Well, this is a question. What kind of human immortality do we want to discuss here. We could follow the highlander setup where you can die by severing your head from your spine, but you cannot get sick. Not sure about starvation... In Highlander, you would die from starvation, then revive, die, revive, etc until you found food... posted by volonteshiva |

I think if someone chops off your head, then you will live as your body AND as your head Actually if your eye pops out you will still see everything out of this eye. After a while you will be everywhere. posted by knn |
