»List Your Favorite or Least Favorite People«

This is a list - in historical order -I finished last night of the people I think had the most net positive impact on world history. I think with all these popular search terms it should get a lot of hits, which is why I didn't post it in my blog - even at the risk of getting flamed by Tiefling White laugh. Of course there are plenty of others besides the ones I listed, but this is my list. I didn't include people who I thought had a negative or destructive impact (like Lenin or Hitler) or a neutral- neither good nor bad - impact (like Muhammed or Karl Marx). A few warnings: (1) this list is heavily biased towards the western world because I just don't know anything about important figures in the east; (2) this list is heavily biased toward men (only four women; they're in bold type) because I have found in my reading that - due to the prevalence of sexism - most of the women who are famous are just unaccomplished hereditary aristocrats or women who are famous for being attractive, like movie stars, etc. (however when there is an important woman in a positive way, she really stands out, like Joan of Arc) and I refuse to do any historical "affirmative action"; (3) some of the more recent figures (Aleister Crowley, Douglas MacArthur, Howard Hughes, etc.) may seem relatively unimportant. This is because they are people whose positive impact has, in my opinion, not been fully appreciated yet. Okay here goes:

Zoroaster, Homer, Sappho , Pythagoras, Sophocles, Pericles, Socrates, Hippocrates, Plato, Aristotle, Alexander, Hannibal, Julius Caesar, Hildegard of Bingen , Francis of Assisi, Marco Polo, Dante Alighieri, Joan of Arc , Christopher Columbus, Hieronymus Bosch, Leonardo da Vinci, Nicolaus Copernicus, Michelangelo Buonarotti, Elizabeth I of England , Galileo Galilei, William Shakespeare, Renee Descartes, Isaac Newton, Voltaire, Benjamin Franklin, Jean-Jacques Rousseau,George Washington, Thomas Paine, Thomas Jefferson, Johann von Goethe, Wolgang Mozart, Horatio Nelson, Napoleon Bonaparte, Robert E. Lee, Abraham Lincoln, Ludwig von Beethoven,Charles Darwin, Mohandas Gandhi, Winston Churchill, Aleister Crowley, Albert Einstein, Douglas MacArthur, Franklin Roosevelt, T.E. Lawrence, and Howard Hughes.

That's it. I was actually amazed at how many Christians I decided to put on my list. If you want to know more, all of these people have entries at

Anyone who wants to should post their own list or ask me a question.

Ho Hum, Moving On

I just made up a little "shit list" of historical figures who I think have had the most negative impact on world history. Interestingly, I found I could safely include many people from outside Europe and America in contrast to my "positive" list, which was mostly people who operated in the western world. I don't know why this is; maybe I haven't heard enough about the positive important people who operated in the east. Also the western world has generally been more integrated in terms of cultural exchange, just because the countries are smaller and less isolated than China, India, etc. so a person is historically more likely to have a cross-cultural impact there.
Anyway here goes:

Attila the Hun, Genghis Khan, Hernan Cortez, Ivan IV (the Terrible) of Russia, George III of England, Andrew Jackson, Sigmund Freud (arguably the worst scientific fraud in history), Jack the Ripper (whoever you think he was, he was the first famous serial killer), Vladimir Lenin, Josef Stalin, Adolf Hitler, George W. Bush.

Descartes would definitely be on my favorites list, but so would Kant, for disproving Descartes.

Descartes' most famous and widely used contribution is the Cartesian coordinate system in mathematics. This is the basis of modern geometry and is why I put him on the list, and it is still in practical use today. I don't think Kant "disproved Descartes" just by superseding his philosophy regarding the existence of God. Philosophy in general is more a matter of influence than proof, and this is why in the modern era I emphasized social philosophers like Tom Paine and Jean-Jacques Rousseau whose work actually influenced the course of world history, rather than just the course of philosophy itself.

You're right. Superseding would have been a better word choice. I'm guilty of oversimplifying, Very Happy .

I didn't put him on my (very short) list due to cartesian coordinates. I did it for his overthrow of Aristotalian philosophy. Now, this is probably due to my interest in philosophy eclipsing my interest in mathematics.

That's basically what Freud implied: he said that the fact that there was so much resistance to his theories in the world was proof that they were true! In other words, the reason why so many people hate Freud is because Freud was so brilliant! Reminds me of the whole Jesus story thing, but that's offtopic...

I have a book called "Freudian Fraud" by the psychiatrist E. Fuller Torrey. It is a total scientific skewering of Freud's ideas. One thing I learned from that book was that, even though Freud's ideas were nowhere near as famous and celebrated in Europe as they were in America, he really did not like America. In fact, he called America "a gigantic mistake." US prisoner

She's a genius. Anyone who can do all that celebrity shit and not become a total whore is amazing.

I want to add Britney Spears to my list of people I hate, just because she is lame.

Also add Mel Gibson to the shitty people list, because he is in a cult called Opus Dei that roll babies in goat excrement for the glory of the Pope.

Also take Steven Spielberg off the people I like and add him to the people I hate, because I think he wants to be president. Trust me on this one: film directors or actors should not be president. They are all too stupid for the job. And Spielberg's films have always sucked, I decided.

PS that thing about stupid films stars reminds me, add Ronald Reagan to the list of people I hate.

LOTR OMFG SUX

Oh yeah, and I hate Peter Jackson. I loved Tolkien as a kid; now I hate it. Thank Peter Jackson for that.

Why is everything black and blue in Jackson's Middle Earth? Note to Mr. Jackson: just because you took classic, colorful fiction and turned into a splatter flick, doesn't make you "dark and disturbing" like the reviewers said. It merely makes you the guy who destroyed - for a massive profit - the best fairytale ever told.

The whole trilogy of films was shit. Hobbitshit.

It really was, I was actually ranting about this to my lord of the rings obsessed friend. The movies were pure shit.

1.Gimli is a comic relief
2.Legolas is an extreme skateboard warrior who can grind down the tail of huge monsters and kill everyone onboard without so much as breaking a sweat.
3.Most main characters are nearly superheros killing hundreds of orcs at a time.
4.For some reason no arrows ever came close to any of the main characters even when orcs were firing directly at them and they had no cover.
5.They dug urukai out of the ground that was never in the books.
6.The fell beast lands and a girl with a sword decapitates it soooo easily.
7.(this refers to the books as well) no man can kill the witch king i would think refers to the race of men not the opposite gender, also if men cant kill it why cant a hobbit?
8.A half eaten baby could have directed the movies better.

The person I dislike the most at this point has to be Barack Obama. AAAAAll these promises, that I truly believe only a wizard can accomplish. It is one thing to talk to a factory that has been closed down. It is another thing to deal with Georgia and Russia, which he is very silent about. I promise you tax cuts. how? I promise to bring the troops home? And have all the good stuff collapse that our soldiers died for? how? I promise
healthcare for everyone. how? I promise to turn around the economy. how? I went to a church for let's say 15 years were the pastor condamned America, but I am a true American. how? I keep on attacking President Bush, since he is not running the race and cannot say anything back, but I am your man. How? I symphatize with all the people who have lost their jobs, (so does the vatican) and I will give you your jobs back. how? I refuse to put my hand on the bible when a political agenda requires me to do so, but I am a true Christian. How? I have the support of Hollywood, actors who only live for themselves and make movies that perpetuates violence, degrading of woman, who get a boobjob at the age of 14, were men play with childeren, so you see, I am young and hip and in tune with the needs of the young people. Really? My wife bears a resemblance to Jackie O. Please Jackie O, was the cream of the crop when it came to sophistication, Michelle has years to go before she gets there. PLEASE, I urge each and everyone to listen to him carefully and not just be persuaded by his "charms." Think critically before you vote, after all, actions speak louder than words.
My favorite person, is anyone who does a good deed, without asking for a reward.
