»What's your favorite movie of all times?«

I'd have to say »Dances with Wolves« by Kevin Costner .
I'm truly addicted to that film, every single detail is perfect in it: the costumes, the acting, the Native American language, the direction. I saw twice the original, uncut version which is over 5 hours long.

Here're a few snapshots:

The Matrix (the whole trilogy), without a doubt.

I have two: »Lawrence of Arabia« and »The Aviator«. Lawrence of Arabia is amazing just because of the history and tragedy of the whole thing: the way it begins with his death after the war, the desert scenery, and the way it immerses you in the total alien-ness, to western eyes, of the Arab culture. On the other hand, The Aviator is good because it's more of a triumph: it's about a very sick person (Howard Hughes) who finds someting he loves (aviation, the film has incredible CGI flying scenes)and follows it through enormous adversity to come out at the end a hero, at least in his own eyes. Both are about people I admire, T.E. Lawrence and Howard Hughes. Both are the most ambitious works of master directors, David Lean and Martin Scorcese. And finally both have great acting in the leading roles by actors we wouldn't normally see as "great actor" types, Peter O'Toole and Leonardo DiCaprio.

Compare and Contrast

The ONEder Man:
gkiss:

oh come on, that was a cheap rip off of braveheart

»Gladiator« was way different from »Braveheart«, and much better too.

(1) Gladiator had a better director: Ridley Scott (»Alien«, »Blade Runner«, »Black Hawk Down«Thumb Up) vs. Mel Gibson (»The Passion of the Christ«Thumb Down) , and it showed.

(2) Gladiator 's battle scenes were not as gross and over-the-top as Braveheart 's. First rule of historical filmmaking: it doesn't matter what really happened, only the way most people imagine it happened. Even the Roman architecture in Gladiator is bigger and more spectacular than it really is or was - I've been in the Coliseum and it's not that big. Shakespeare knew this and so does Ridley Scott, but Mel Gibson apparently didn't get the memo.

(3) Gladiator was about some real people (like Joaquin Phoenix's character Emperor Commodus) and some made up people (like Russell Crowe's character Maximus Decimus Meridius), but mostly events that never happened. Braveheart was about real people and real events (William Wallace, King Edward I "Longshanks", etc.). That can work sometimes, like in David Lean's »Lawrence of Arabia«, but it really takes a genius like Lean to do it right. Mel Gibson is no David Lean, as we saw with the Jesus movie. Gibson doesn't understand the concept of history, only blood and guts, and he's always preaching something, whether it's anglophobia and homophobia in Braveheart or anti-Semitism in The Passion of the Christ . There's no preaching in Gladiator .

(4) Last but not least, the ending of Braveheart was stupid. Not just that the hero was ritually executed (I admit that's hard to avoid since Wallace really was executed), but that it was done in such a cheesy way, with Gibson yelling, "Freedom!" and all that. The ending of Gladiator was a beautiful dream sequence of an ancient Roman afterlife (remember the field of wheat and all that)? I really liked that ending. I almost cried because it was exactly the kind of thing pagan writers wrote about the Elysian Fields, the section of the land of the dead where heroes went after they died. This was before Christianity came along with its stupid angels and harps and the throne of God and such. I don't know what to do

Class dismissed.
(Sorry to get into history and trash Christianity in just about every post but hey that's me.)Evil evil

ZOOLANDER

The ONEder Man:
shawshank redemption

Good but best? I don't think so.

You all seem to be choosing serious films with good directors and good reviews and beautifull story and such Thumb Down

So I'll choose »Zoolander« on the grounds that it was the most hilarious thing I have ever seen, the scenes where Derrick describes how he works on his looks and his catalogue are hilarious and Hansel on his scooter makes me laugh everytime.

Plus will ferrle as Mougato was just great

"oh im sorry did my pin get in the way of my ass? do us all a favour and lose five pounds immediatly or get out of my building right NOW, GET OUT"

White laugh White laugh

Oh and all of the coal mineing scenes are fucking classic.
Mougato:
