We should keep in mind, though, that there are some awesome psychiatrists out there who seriously question the biochemical model and are quite vocal in their opposition. Your TeenScreen and TMAP programs are just fronts for the pharmaceutical industry. They want lifelong customers for their drugs. They get them by paying psychiatry to do their dirty work. any proof whatsoever about whether the patient thinks the drug is helping them? Oh, certainly, lots of people feel helped by drugs, particularly the SSRI family of antidepressants. They are not giving their informed consent, however, as patients are rarely told about the side effects of these drugs. Quote: with drug costs the way they are now, what patient would continue on a drug which is doing nothing for them? In many cases, patients have no choice. They are forced to take medication as a condition of living out in the community. In the USA, this is called involuntary outpatient commitment and it occurs in 43 states. Quote: you seem to jump to the conclusion of "anti-psychiatry" (if that's what we are calling it) is the fault of "bogus diagnosis" from doctors. But where are the studies of the patients comments of their own treatment and whether or not it worked to help their wellbeing? Well, I wouldn't say we've jumped to any conclusions. Most of us have learned the hard way. And let's be clear: if people want to take psychotropic drugs, more power to them. My concern is forced treatment. Quote: after all, as you stated earlier, that is your main purpose...the wellbeing of the patients correct? and if it works, as it has in holy's case, who are you to deny him of that chance? I wouldn't deny anybody the treatment of their choice. But I do think psychiatry has a responsibility to be honest about the damage that these drugs cause. Now it may be that a patient would weigh the choice and decide to take the drugs anyway. And that's fine. People are entitled to make whatever health care choices they want. posted by Francesca Allan |

How much of this new form of dealing with kids is due to the looking-down-upon of corporal punishment (spanking) nowadays? I mean we all hear the stories from a generation or two back that they would never dream of talking to their parents the way we modern kids / young adults do. In some ways it good to be able to be more open with parents to be able to have frank talks about sex and protection. But if a kid is out of control, you can't spank them, grounding and activity restrictions have no effect, then what are you left with? Now I am not talking about beating a kid across the back with a belt here... I am not really sure I am even for spanking, but if you have a spoiled 7 yr old where no other form of behavior modification works, what are you options? On the flip side, I also don't believe spanking will "solve the problem, once and for all". It can lead to anger in the kid and things could get worse. posted by volonteshiva |

But what if spanking prevented a child from STAYING spoiled when the first signs of being spoiled appeared? The issue in this scenario commonly seems to be that parents nowadays cannot say no to their children. The kid wants something, they get it. The parent tries to say no, the kid throws a tantrum, so they give the kid what he/she wants just to shut them up. The kid learns the lesson well... Make a big enough scene and you will get what you want. posted by volonteshiva |

Let's not get offtopic. Since children are basically children in every country, it means that something is terribly out of control in USA and Canada regarding kid-drugging. It seems that other countries can solve their problems with spoiled kids WITHOUT drugs. posted by knn |

To be sure, North Americans are leading the world in chemical lobotomies. I'm not really sure what the state of the law is when it comes to spanking children. I've long been under the impression that people still do it, just not in public. In any event, I think a far more contributing factor to the tidal wave of psychiatric labelling of children has been the phase-out of parenting. Maternity leave is one year long and afterwards the vast majority of kids end up in full-time daycare. Most intact families have two working parents. Lots of families have only one parent and he or she is forced to work. By the end of the day, there's neither the energy nor the inclination to parent effectively. People have been brought up to believe that two incomes are necessary to raise a family because they demand a three bedroom home in the suburbs and a new car (or new cars) every five years. Our priorities are way askew and the cost in human terms is horrendous. There's research being done now on the chemical changes that Ritalin and similar drugs produce in children. There's evidence that those chemical changes are the basis for later drug addiction such as the current crystal meth craze. posted by Francesca Allan |

When children as young as 5 years of age commit suicide because of the psychiatric drugs they are prescribed based on unscientific diseases created by psychiatrist, ask yourself who is really psycho? The brain/body connection may be interfered with due to pressure on the nerve leading to that part of the brain or organ. Remove that pressure and you have just released the life force of the Central Nervous System to function at 100% and perform as designed. Children may also experience change in personality due to vaccines received, autism is one form of changed personality due to vaccination. A lot of parents are threatened, pressured and dictated by school counselor, nurses, teachers, school psychiatrist what drugs their child will take or the child may be taken away from them, forcefully drugged or send to a special school. These ignorant or sometimes knowledgeable tyrants (psychiatrist) are the ones that should be placed on these drugs they so highly recommend. You have a choice and unless you stand up for your children and stop silently going along with these Powers to Be you are responsible for ruining your childrens lives. Having a spoiled child is kids play compared to the damage you do with these drugs. So STAND UP FOR YOUR CHILDREN! posted by L |
