He was criticized for not helping the child; he replied there were relief workers there to do that. posted by Marlbro |

I saw this program about Bob Geldof and the 'feed the world' single the other day. They showed him going to visit Ethiopia and it doesn't seem obvious what they could have done for all those people that would have made a real difference without the money. If Kevin Carter had taken the child away from the vulture, what next? Take him to overworked aid workers? When you are surrounded by horror, what can you do? posted by fatpie42 |

If Kevin Carter had taken the child away from the vulture, what next? Take him to overworked aid workers? When you are surrounded by horror, what can you do? precisely...but we always look for scapegoats in every situation...unfortunately for carter...he was the one to take the blame what made it worse is that it was the media that he worked for that demonised him the most posted by the anomaly |

The irony is, this a photo that raised a lot of money for the relief agencies and probably saved countless other starving babies. Would he have been better not taking the photo and helping just the one child? Maybe he should have taken the photo then tried to save the child later...who knows. Only Kevin was in the position to make that decision, and he paid the price for it. Without pictures like these the rest of the world is blissfully ignorant of the problems and hardships in other countries... One thing to bear in mind…there were not many lone photographers walking around Sudan, could somebody else have helped? posted by Marlbro |

every once in awhile a picture like this crosses me and i go, "wowzers." then three days later i forget about it. but this one will make me remember it for about a week or more. i feel a bit sorry for the photographer... fatpie42: Take him to overworked aid workers? i don't quite get it, if he could've helped, what could have he done? whats wrong with taking him to "overworked aid workers"? at least its better than walking away. my dad saw the picture and i told him about the photographer and he said, "the photographer should die, that's right." anyway, he's rather biased in his opinions. posted by sangu |

sangu: whats wrong with taking him to "overworked aid workers"? If the aid workers are overworked, then that means there are a lot of people in need of care...which means the child would probably end up dying anyways, because he wouldn't be able to receive treatment in time. sangu: my dad saw the picture and i told him about the photographer and he said, "the photographer should die, that's right." Just for taking a picture of reality in a place in Africa? I agree he should have helped the poor kid, but think about it: what would you have done in his situation...? the anomaly: what made it worse is that it was the media that he worked for that demonised him the most that's horrible! Gah! Poor photographer. And poor kid. posted by nocturnal_anonymous |
