»Why Wiccans Suck«

I happened to stumble on a site about Wicca which I couldn't help but applaud.

The motto of the site is, "I have no problem with Wicca. It's the Wiccans I can't stand." The owner of the site lists a bunch of reasons why he can't stand Wiccans, among them...
Immaturity

"Christianity sucks. I quit." So, you want to rebel? You might consider a complete 180, right down to devil-worship and black magic... but you don't have the guts to go that far, since you're still secretly terrified of going to Hell.
Hey, Wicca is perfect! It's actually not that evil, but your family doesn't know that. You can creep everyone out and keep your soul safe at the same time!

"Look at me, I'm a witch!" That oh-so-dangerous leap out of the broom closet, which usually occurs within the first week you buy a book about Wicca. You want to let everyone know about your change of religion, for some godawful reason, especially parents and authority figures. Religious beliefs can't possibly live quietly inside of your own head, they have to be shared! (But you aren't pushy about it, oh no... don't you just hate those Jehova's Witnesses?)
You don your little pentacle necklace and wear it in public, just -itching- for someone to walk up to you and start an argument. Then you'll be able to correct them about dozens of things you've learned word-for-word... ( "Male witches aren't called warlocks!" ) Oh! Don't you just love the attention you get?

If you don't want to step out of the broom closet, there are still various ways to stick a toe out the door for each of the people you want to impress and/or frighten. (Like wearing your pentacle -under- your shirt, on a short chain, so it'll slide into view if you shift just right. Or you can wear gothed- or hippied-out clothing and say "Oh, Goddess!" every five minutes. Or you can call your cat a familiar and your cookbook a grimoire [accidentally, of course] ...the list goes on.)

Yeah, I've seen this site a while ago, it's pretty funny... Thumb Up

The weirder thing is that I actually saw it posted on a site of a Wiccan, who was showing the site to make sure that people don't become Wiccans for these reasons stated.

Aha, reverse psychology, it works everytime, I tell you... Silly and stupid, that's how I feel

That Wicca is usually a pubertary fashion can be seen from the fact that the people running around in black dresses are usually not older than 25-30.

There you have probably the real anti-Christianity: While older people tend to become more Christian (going to church etc), younger tend to become "satanists". White laugh

Thus Tiefling's "Immaturity list" is adequate.

Yes, and I'd put the average age at much younger than that, too. And most come from the ranks of the socially inept / "uncool." Now, these Wiccans will claim that it is because of the fact that they're Wiccans that people don't like them. But I claim that in the majority of cases, people don't like them, *then* they turn to fluffbunny Wicca to explain away their social ineptness.

I think the "uncool" people also turn to Wicca not only to hide their inability to socialize, but also to attract attention and create an air of mystery about themselves. It boosts their self-esteeem, I suppose.

One could also say this about churchgoing Christians, noc_anon. Before they start going to church, they are uncool and not well-liked by the community, thus they go to church merely to "create an air" of piousness or spirituality, in order to "boost their self-esteem." However, I don't think that is a fair statement about churchgoing Christians, nor do I think yours or Tiefling's statements about people who practice "Wicca" are fair.

Really, isn't this an entire thread devoted to bashing people of a certain faith, not on political grounds or theological grounds, but rather just because you don't like them personally? Isn't that rather...well, scary? What? When? Where? Why?

Real Wiccans aren't in it to rebel or go agaisn't the Church. That's all the immature ones who have no idea whatsoever what Wicca is about and they are an embarrasment. I actually wonder how much these trendy 'Wiccans' actually care about the Rede.
I'll let you all have your opinions, even though I don't like them I'll respect that it's your opinions, for is this site not call In My Opinion?
Aaah, is there anything better than to post here and to drink something Cheerio!

No, it's about people who joined Wicca not because of the religion/practice itself, but because of an alterior motive.

And it's about the site, which does not bash Wiccans, but rather, invalid reasons why people join the religion of Wicca.

How is that an unfair statement about churchgoing Christians? It might be that some people are just what you mentioned - people that go to church for the sake boosting their self-esteem (obviously not all, but I'm sure some do). Actually, I would say that is one of the positive side-effects of joining any group, especially Christianity because you are proclaimed to be a child of God and worthy in God's eyes of the sacrifice of Jesus Christ(but that's a different topic), but to proclaim yourself to be a 'Wiccan' or a 'Christian' just to raise your self-esteem is not appropiate, and hurts others who are 'true' believers in whatever they believe in.

The title of the thread and the URL of the website that the thread is about are "Why Wiccans Suck," not "Why Some Wiccans Suck," "Why Fake Wiccans Suck," or "Why Wannabe Wiccans Suck."

Thus the criticisms in this thread are levelled at all Wiccans, not just the ones you happen not to like. I rest my case.

The statement ("Before they start going to church, they are uncool and not well-liked by the community, thus they go to church merely to "create an air" of piousness or spirituality, in order to "boost their self-esteem."") is unfair because it is not qualified by the adjectives "some" or "many" and thus purports to represent all churchgoing Christians as being phony or fake. Similarly, this thread makes no distinction between people who may feel drawn to Wicca for whatever reason and not just the reasons attributed to "Wiccans" (no adjective quailfier) here.

And to answer your central claim about Christianity, Christianity is not a group, but a faith; even if there were only one Christian in the world (a distinct possiblity due to the irrationality of the church itself) it would still be a good thing.

"Why Jews Suck"

Another argument against this kind of thread is to put it in the context of another, frequently persecuted faith like Judaism, like starting a thread called "Why Jews Suck." You wouldn't do that to Jews (I hope), and thus you shouldn't do it to Wiccans either. It's wrong.

Actually there's a problem there

Hey it's fatpie42 here.

The problem with criticising people for saying "Why Jews suck" is that being Jewish does not only refer to a religion. It also refers to a race. Becoming Jewish by race is not a choice and thus it is unfair to insult someone for being Jewish by race.

I would see no problem with:
"Why religious Jews suck"
"Why buddhists suck"
or even
"Why atheists suck"

Rather than being upset by the last of these titles which refers to my personal beliefs, I am much more upset by sites like
(actual site) and their section on atheism

The URL of the web site was more chosen for its shock value, IMO. It wouldn't have been as shocking if it were, "Why Some Wiccans Suck." The guy who started the site did so as a Wiccan, actually. He was tired of all the people who joined the religion for the wrong reasons (the ones he enumerates on his site). He makes it clear that he feels Wicca is a perfectly valid religion.

Now as far as I can determine, he does not attempt to explain what he feels the right reasons are for joining Wicca.
