MindSlave: Soldiers don't fight for their country, they fight for each other. In wartime, the home country is seen as the ultimate refuge and authority, but no soldier ever went to war because they loved their country. Rather, soldiers kill because the enemy wants to kill their brothers-in-arms, and thus the enemy must be killed in turn for the self-defense of the military unit. Perhaps not everyone shares your ideals about fighting in a war. Soldiers do not sign up for a draft, people do. They then become soldiers. To fight effectively, I'd say the recruiters wouldn't want to risk signing up someone who could react unpredictably. They'd consider it the same as asking a physically disabled person to fight because they believed the same ideas. MindSlave: They know that their enemies want to kill them and their fellow soldiers, so they fight in self-defense. Soldiers do not sign up for a draft, people do. And not every person wants to fight for his 'kinsman' in some unknown part of an obscure country. They sign up for the money, or because they were forced to, or because they agree with the principles of one warring party (some actually do), or maybe something else. But this is not about why soldiers fight.. MindSlave: ryder: Or, they'd be conscientious objectors Another word for coward. Whatever you say. posted by ryder |

Soldiers do not sign up for a draft, people do. They then become soldiers. Who said anything about a draft? I'm talking voluntary enlistment or commissioning of schizoaffective soldiers in the US Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marines! The draft is only necessary when there are not enough soldiers available to fight a war, or if one socioeconomic or racial group is disproportionately represented in the armed forces. There are plenty of mentally ill people who would volunteer for the military, on one condition: that they be allowed to serve at the front in a combat role. ryder: To fight effectively, I'd say the recruiters wouldn't want to risk signing up someone who could react unpredictably. They'd consider it the same as asking a physically disabled person to fight because they believed the same ideas. Who's going to react unpredictably? A mentally ill person can be trained like any other person to do any other job! In fact, most MindSlavery brand psychiatrists (TM) argue that the best way to reintigrate schizophrenics into society is through the work force. I just take it a step further and say they should be allowed to serve their country in combat like everybody else. posted by MindSlave |

Francesca Allan: How about just answering the question, Holy? If Jesus heals the sick, why do you need psych meds? I think that's an unfair question. Unfair but important, thus it should be asked in the Philosophy section: "If Jesus heals, why are there ill believers?" posted by knn |
