It's labeled an "internet classic", but this is the first time I've heard of it. Anyway, Hugh Gallagher wrote this essay and it won some prize, and submitted it to colleges. It's funny, it sort of ridiculed the whole college admittance process. One part that I particularly liked: On weekends, to let off steam, I participate in full-contact origami. And talk about luck! He got his first big publishing break - as a college freshman - from JFK Jr. ! His satiric personal statement was reprinted in Harper's magazine the year he began his studies at New York University. John Kennedy, Jr. spotted the essay in Harper's, contacted Gallagher, and after a beer together at the Whitehorse Tavern, passed the essay on to Rolling Stone founder Jann Wenner. posted by MindSlave |
