US press reports of secret CIA prisons in eastern Europe 'must be investigated' and would constitute 'a serious human rights violation ' if confirmed, Council of Europe Human Rights Commissioner Alvaro Gil-Robles warned today.
'The possible existence of such centres in member states of the Council of Europe is extremely worrying,' the commissioner said. ' Such practices would constitute a serious human rights violation and further proof of the crisis of values that the use of certain methods in the fight against terrorism is provoking. 'It is essential that these allegations be thoroughly investigated,' Gil-Robles said, adding that he would be 'following this matter closely'. The Washington Post newspaper reported on Wednesday that the US intelligence agency was holding Al-Qaeda suspects in prisons in eight countries including Thailand, Afghanistan and 'several democracies in eastern Europe', in a system conceived after the September 11, 2001 attacks on the US. They should investigate it immediately posted by knn |

a: Can the torturers really get out usefull info of ppl with torturing, or just the info what they want to hear? First of all, I'd like to point out that the article posted by knn states that reports of the existence of secret CIA prisons in Eastern Europe have not been confirmed. So this is all rumor at this point, as far as I'm concerned. Also, to tell you the truth, I don't think the objective of torture these days is to get more information. I had a friend who used to work for the CIA, and what he said was they always have much more information than they know what to do with. What they need are more smart people who are qualified to analyze the information to decide what information is "actionable intelligence," which means information that can be used to meet a specific goal of the agency, and what information is "noise," which means useless information. My friend didn't tell me this part, but I suspect the reason why there have been so many stories of American torture during the War on Terror is because the the current US regime wants to convince potential terrorists that they will suffer more punishment than just imprisonment if they are caught.
